Old Land Cruiser steel is pretty hard stuff, after going through a number of drill bits working on my junk I found this little gem. Maybe I'm the only one who's in the dark here, but if you need to enlarge something in a hurry this thing is the ticket....

That's where I first saw em. I usually need to bore through 1/4" - 3/4" steel and havn't had a chance to pick one up yet. They're like $30 or so for one bit.

Super useful I'd imagine for the thinner stuff.

They are for sheet metal my friend, you can get a 'last chance arbor' for holesaws which will do much better with the thicker material.

Starrett A-19 'oops arbor' is one example.

I've used them for 1/4 inch steel before. As long as you can drill from both sides. I love these bits. I have 3 of them.

Step drills are not something I use on thicker sheet metal, sounds like they work for you. These work well up to 1/4" and are easier to get an accurate hole than standard drills when the hole must be drilled with a hand-drill.

You can get a decent set at harbour freight for cheap. Commonly used where I work (on aluminum though) up to 3/8. (gotta do it from both sides)

harbor frieght has a super deal on them right now. I think three for $10 or something like that. Not sure about the quality of course..
