We just imported a 1987 HJ61 with the 12HT engine. I love it, but the tires are huge and the lift is more than we really want. It handles like driving a tractor on ice. I'd like some advice on what the best tire size might be for the current lift or if we should reduce the lift to improve handling. I don't know what the current lift is, but the tires are 35".

Didn't you know what lift it had when you got it? Is it SOA, or is it just stiff 4" lift springs? That is what it looks like. Can that little fella in the back even jump onto the tailgate?

Maybe one of these questions will give you some ideas.

What about taking a spring or two out of the leaf pack?

Add away bars?

How's the shackle angle?if its straight up and down this would give a harsh ride.

Get the current springs de-arched a little?

Trade me your rig for mine;)?

I found a local 4 wheel drive suspension shop that people are recommending that will help me assess what my options are. Since we bought the car based on pictures only, I was a little surprised by the lift. Of course it showed in the pictures, but is bigger in real life than I expected. Overall, we're thrilled with the truck, but to be more of a daily driver, tuning the suspension and right-sizing the tires should help in the handling.

If you'd be interested in factory Toyota chrome 60-series wheels, I'm on Vashon Island too, and I'm trying to sell my old set (of five).

I polished the chrome and they look like they're absolutely brand new from 5+ feet away.

The tires on them are probably not what you're looking for, though. 235/75r15 street tires.

Thank you GeologistFelix, I like the current wheels and will just get some smaller tires, something like a 31 or 32". I learned that the rear shackles were straight up and down, which contributed to the harsh ride. I took the truck to 4Wheel Parts in Tacoma and we will be modifying the suspension from its current 5" lift to something more modest. I love the TLC and look forward to having an improved, and safer, ride.
