Hey ya'll... I need some help from someone in the greenville area. My starter kicked the bucket last week and it took until today to get a new one. So I installed the new one and the battery is so weak from being cranked on and sitting that it won't turn the engine over. I tried using jumper cables to let it charge off a friend's car, but that didn't work either. So what I'm wondering is if anyone has a trickle down charger that they could hook me up with for a day or two. I just bought the battery in november, so I know it's good, just needs some juice. email at jnburns@gmail.com or call me on my cell (336) 210-2784 and let me know if you can help me out with this. Thanks, I really appreciate it.

The instructions that came with the starter said something like if the battery read 12.6 volts it was 100% charged, 11.8 it was discharged. My battery read right at 10 volts. So according to that it was really dead. It would kind of crank, but didn't want to do much. I let it sit for about 5-10 minutes on my friend's car and it still didn't want to crank. So I don't really know, I just figured a trickle down would be my best option at this point.

yeah 10 volts is low. Did you try cranking it whilel it was hooked up to the other car that was running?
Do you have a harbor frieght close by? I bought a charger from them last weekend for $20.

I have had a lot of dead batteries in my day, but have always been able to jump off of other peoples cars......... maybe you didn't get a good ground when you put in the starter or a good connection from the battery + to the starter, just a thought

Have Charger but I'm 27 miles north of Greenville. 15 miles north of Travelers rest. PM if you're interested.

roll start?

Is it possible to roll start the Cruiser? I've found that in jump starting it is
helpful to have the other vehicle running and let them sit there
hooked up for a few minutes if possible before attempting the jump.
I like keeping a jump pack thing for just these sort of situations.
When the 80 died coming home from Tellico this year. The battery dead.
No door lights...nada....I stuck a battery jump thing on and away we went home.
New alternator install and a quick charge fixed the problem.
Chargers aren't very $ and a nice thing to have around.
Push it, if you can, and let truck charge the battery...or..
Check ground connections. Check jumper connections. Try to run the jumper car
for a bit first.
I bet a NAPA or Auto Zone store would put a quick charge on your battery
if all else fails.
Good luck. Let us know.

swap the battery from a different vehicle if possible, and have the battery load tested. It can still show voltage and have a dead short, and the lights will work, trying to jump the battery will not work either. Check you connections too, I can get you a charger on Monday if you still need it.

Well a buddy of mine from church had a charger at his house, and he only lives about 5 miles from the school, so he was able to bring it up and I now have it sitting outside getting it's charge on. Hopefully that will solve my problems. The reason why I didn't want to just jump it is that I'm suspicious of my alternator's output. So I really don't want to rely on it to recharge a sorry battery... Anyways, I plan on taking it to advance tomorrow to have them test the electrical system. Thanks for all the offers for help. I'll let you know what turns up.

i tried to buy a alternator from advance. After 4 that take over a day to come each they gave me my money back. Napa's worked the first time. Always have them check the new ones if you get it.

good idea

Or you could go to Mr Alternator and have yours rebuilt for a lot less and they could probably boost it.

I recently needed a new alt for the 80. $$$..Ouch!
Thing is, a "new" one from Toyota is a re-built
and they wanted the core.
I put the new re-build in but I'm having the old one
re-built for a spare. It's an 80 amp alt and a spare
one wouldn't be bad to have lying around.

So after having the battery on the charge, 2 amp 12 volt setting, all night long, I got her runnin today at about 2:45ish. So I cruise on down to Advance in TR, and the freakin alt. diode isn't working. The dumb thing is putting out somewheres around 12.3 volts and 0.01 amps. That's right folks, 1/10 of an amp. So I had them call up the advance that's down the street from my house in NC to see if they had a record of me buying that alternator aprox. 2 years ago. They did and it was under a limited lifetime warranty, so I'm going back tomorrow to pick up my free alternator. Hopefully this one will work. If it doesn't it has a 3 month warranty.

Alternators can be retarded sometimes. I had a new one put in my '88 Honda Accord a couple years ago. That was freaking insane. The alt. is mounted in such a place that it is nearly impossible to get to it without breaking your arm. My mechanic shared his secret with me. What he does is removes the front tire, pulls the driveshaft, undoes one of the motor-mounts, jacks that portion of the motor up a little and he can just get accesability to it. He ended up having to do this 4 times in the span of about a month to my car as 3 of the alternators he put in were defective (2 different brands). He did all the work for free on the defective ones and finally got so pissed of the 4th time he ordered a high dollar one, it worked.

After this I've started thinking about installing dual alts sometime in the future when I'm running a winch or some other accesories... How complicated would that be? Just fabbing up a new bracket and running some wires... doesn't seem like it'd be too difficult.

what kind of alt do you have? Is it an internal regulated one? If it has an external Like most 40's do then it may be bad. I personally wouln't go with another alt on a f or 2f a 3fe might be okay but on the earlier engines you need all the hp possible. I would get a GM 12si one wire self regulated from Mr alternator. It puts out about 130 amps and was 120$

Well I just installed the new alternator, hopefully this one will work out alright for me. If not I'm going to have it rebuilt and set to a higher amperage. But it was free, so I'm not complaining. I do have one more question though. On the back of the alt. there was a sticker saying "this unit is externally regulated. We recommend replacing the regulator upon installation of this unit." So I was wondering, is that something I need to do so I don't smoke yet another alt.?

don't order a regulator from Coolcruisers.com. I installed it and it was to many volts and they told me it was normal. it was like 14-15 volts. I put the old one back in and things are great.

Dumb question, but I just want to make sure... the pulley on the new alternator is about .5" smaller in diameter than the old one. The guy said that just meant it would produce more power at a lower rpm, which I figure is good for wheeling applications. My question is, is this going to cause a problem with highway speeds? I would thing the regulator would prevent it from having any negative effects.. I suppose I'm just trying to cover all my bases. Thanks for all the help ya'll.
