Hi all!
Currently achieving the frame-off resto of my BJ42(1984 vintage) at the Toyota local shop.On the clock there are 200.000km or 120.000 miles registered.
By the first test drive the problem arised:the cylinder head is off!
We have decided to order a new cylinder head .
When the part arrived we noticed two things:first,it had a different number forged on it:58014 instead of 58010 on the original 3B.Second,the 4 combustion (or precombustion)chambers cannot be used in the new cylinder head because they are a little bit smaller! We understood that if we wanted to use this new part,we had to order its own combustion chambers as well.
No doubt the 2 cylinder heads are not identical, but the parts department told us that the older is not availale anymore,so the only way to go is the new part.
I knew that there are 2 generations of 3B engines:the first,1981-86 and the second,1986-1989.I knew also that the only difference between the two was in the fuel pump:in line injection pump in the first 3B generation and rotary injection pump in the second generation. The question is:is the cylinder head in the second generation different too??:crybaby:
If so could it be problematic to use these 2nd generation parts at the top of my 3B engine??
Thank you folks for your help!!

PS. SPECTER has two rebuild kits for the 3B as well:one till 9/1984 and another one 9/1984-8/1988.

This is because the newer 3B's have a 5 bearing cam and the older ones have a 3 bearing cam. I'm not sure on the head. I've always gone with the aftermarket head as it's supposedly better and more resistant to cracking. The aftermarket head has the precups installed.

3b (cracking)Heads..

I would like to add some info:when the 3B-II head is face down on a table, the chambers(pre-burner cups)of the old 3B all fall out.You won't need a soft hammer to tap them back in as the Factory Manual
recommends. These 2 heads cannot identical.
:crybaby:
The question is if they interchange, that means to use the 3B-II head(with its 3B-II cups) in my old 3B engine without fear to damage anything in the future...
Any help please?

I would STRONGLY recommend against reusing the pre-combustion chambers in any case. I have lost a 3B due to the pre-combustion chamber cracking and falling into the cylinder and then seizing the engine.
I doubt that a head that bolts on and allows the valves to be properly adjusted as well as maintain the same compression ratio will damage anything. I wouldn't try a 13B-T head though as the 13B-T uses a different head and pistons for a different compression ratio.

3B cracked head

Hi guys,so here some pics:
first the old cracked 3B head, which according to Toyota's parts department has been discontinued...
Then comes the new (post 1986) 3B head, the only available anymore. One should buy the 4 pre-combustion chambers, as theold ones are not compatible with the new head.Already got them:they look grate!
Last but not least, the valves:do I have to replace them(after200.000km) as well?
I'll be gratefoul to you for any suggestion and help!
Thank you guys! :)

I'd be looking at the rockers where the valves touch. That area usually wears and a light machining may be in order to ensure you can accurately set the valve clearances.
Naturally, you'll also do a valve grind anyways to ensure the valves seat properly.

From what I see on the picture, I would go for new valves. But it's difficult to see.
I know it's a fair amount of money you would need for that, but once y've done it you're good for many more km's.

If you could post more detailed photo's of the valves, especially the contact area where they are seated, then judgement is easier.

Everything ok!

I've got a new head ,precombustion chambers ,valves etc.
So everything is new on the upper part of my 3B.Tested and it works great!
Thank you so much Cruiser Guy and Ron R !!!:)PS.Wish I could have some cool:beer: with you:perhaps during the annual Landcruiser meeting in Germany ( The Buschtaxi ,7-9 of September 2007.See more:www.buschtaxi.de )

That would be fun to go to.

So did they use a 3b 2 head? What did you do for an exhaust manifold? As the pattern is different....

Cheer that your truck is back and going, BB

Good to hear the rig is up and running again !!!
Are you sure the meeting is 7-9 september? I'm going to Freizeitpark Mammut to the 6 th International Land Cruiser Meeting (ILCM) near Stadtoldendorf on May 16-20, see http://landcruiser-meeting.net/

I would love to talk to you and have a few    !!!

The Buschtaxi meeting

Oh yes! the Buschtaxi meeting is gonna take place 7-9 September 2007.See more in the homonymous site. Last year they 've been there some hundreds of TLCs, representing all generations of them. Dutch participation has been strong.
A German friend informed me about the meeting of May in Freizeitpark Mamut, but as of yet I don't know if I'll be able to come.
Thank you for your invitation however Ron and hope to see you!

PS.Congratulations for your interesting site!

So there will be two of them then.. Most members of the Dutch Landcruiser Club will be visiting Mamut because it's a lot less driving to get there.

Thanks for the kind words regarding the web-site. One day I hope it will be in English as well ( some of the travel stories) but that takes a lot of time to translate and my english is not that good.
