Did you consider an H41 and keep the stock PTO system?

If an SM420 is definite, then it seems option D is your best choise.

I did...consider this route, but as was the case, I found the sm420 for cheap money.

Hmmm

H41-$600 (retain stock t-case, pto, etc)
SM420 ($150 tranny, $150 bearing kit/gaskets, $75 PTO, $100 driveshaft mods, $50 misc)

HMM....

I sold my SM420 and replaced it with an H41 that will get a Toybox added to it. More low gears than I'll ever need. Also, the H41 shifts nicer and parts are readily available as many are shared with the more common H42.

The crawl ratio difference is significant though, 46:1 for the H41 vs. 66:1 for the SM420 (3sp t-case). That is why I am putting in a Toybox as well.

Pretty sure this pto is gonna work...sourced from a 1965 chevy k20 dump truck. The vertical offset adapter looks a bit strange on the unit, but I will know soon enough it if will work on the tranny and allow me to run my pto driveshafts. We'll see.

Is that PTO unit going to fit inside the frame?

As is, yes it might conflict with the exhaust pipe, but perhaps not. If there is a conflict, I am thinking that I'll be able to remove the vertical spacer that gives it so much width. The pic I posted came from the seller. I'll know more in the next week or so.

that adapter looks like it has helical cut gears in the photo .the 420 is straight cut i believe .that pto might bolt on your tranny without that extra piece mine did .however might not be the same unit but sure looks like it good luck

i geuss i was wrong about the 420.dont know how far back they go but i have a bushell basket full of ptos off chevies and gm trucks mostly military and they are all straight cut.i geuss i got my info wires crossed sorry for that next time i will do more research good luck
