From the part number thread I see the 3B plunger is:

Wilson 45-29-6452

Looking for a local source - that p/n is hard to get in the states. Anyone have a Toyota p/n?

I see that p/n also crosses to:

... I'm going through that list now trying to find a local source for any of those. Toyota p/ns listed don't seem to work.

My plunger died in a big way. :frown:

Some of the Denso p/ns are good, should be easy to get. Oddly they all come up as "plunger" but with a pretty large range in prices:

densoproducts.com
HEAVY DUTY COMPONENTS 053660-7170 053660-7170 Remove Item $23.57 $23.57
HEAVY DUTY COMPONENTS 053660-7111 053660-7111 Remove Item $10.69 $10.69
HEAVY DUTY COMPONENTS 053660-0660 053660-0660 Remove Item $6.83 $6.83
HEAVY DUTY COMPONENTS 053660-0443 053660-0443 Remove Item $4.19 $4.19

Looks like even the cheap one is the right stuff, however - this site has pictures:
http://www.iowamotorparts.com/denso_starter_solenoid_parts.htm

That last site looks like it would be a good US source for the contacts themselves too.

Great research work Drew.

I've added all this cross-referencing to my "little black book".

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Those Toyota numbers don't compute with me either except for the 28235 part. But I can't find "suffix 54061" and all the suffixes I see (that start with 28235) appear on vehicles that are too recent to have the same plunger as you.

Don't forget the "nose-cone-swap" option where you can source everything except the nose-cone from a wrecked 1980s minitruck (Hilux) of the correct model (that used a 2.5kW 12V starter).

The Toyota and Komatsu numbers are confirmed bad (I have a friend).

I ordered the Denso part, as the photos I found online seem to be appropriate. Will let you know, arrives next Friday.

For posterity, I ordered:

1 - Denso HEAVY DUTY COMPONENTS
Stock Number: 053660-0660
Part Number: 053660-0660
Unit Price: $7.59
Extended Price: $7.59

From densoproducts.com and its a perfect fit. Back on the road!!

Thanks for keeping us informed.

Now I know what to get if I ever need one Drew.

I sourced one from my local sparky, it was only €14.50, so that's cheap. I looked up the Toy p/n on ToyoDIY and it gave the price as being €180 or something.

Good to know a Denso p/n for the next time mine fails..... Thanks for that!

Mine didn't fail as spectacularly as yours, did your starter motor kept going too after releasing the key? Mine just kept going and going... doesn't sound good!

Mine failed "open", so the starter just wouldn't turn on at all. There were actually pea-sized balls of molten copper inside the solenoid from what was left of the disk.
