Hello fellow Fj40 friends,

I recently joined the 40 club a few months back. This is a 1978. I got this rig knowing the engine had issues but did not know to what extent until this week when i took apart the whole motor. I know this topic has been covered many times over and dont mean to bore you with many newb questions. But here i go...

I need new pitons, rings, crank shaft, bearings, camshaft, oil pump, carb and distributor.

I intend to remove all emission devices and was told that i need an upgraded Dist and carb. where do i start fellas???

What brands of master rebuild kits have you used or know of that is reliable? Is .020 over on all bearings and rings ok?

If i am eliminating emissions system, what can i do to bypass the vacuum lines?

Can i simply do a complete rebuild where its straight turn key without all the junk???

I forsee this complete rebuild to cost in the range of $4000.00 Its a bit redic... Please give me some advice.....

Thanks in advance :cheers::cheers::cheers:

You're going to need a good machine shop, look for the oldest shop in your area. Have your machinist look at your parts, perhaps they can be saved. Have your machinist order any new parts, gasket kits etc. Carbs & dizzys can be rebuilt.
Lots of threads here about de-smogging. Research.
You can save some money by assembling the motor yourself.
Turn-key is more expensive.
4K sounds about right for a rebuilt 2F.

I just did a complete rebuild on a 2F, everything you are planning minus removing all the smog stuff... I live in Cali with a '76 :( Took it to the machine shop to have everything cleaned up, cam & flywheel was resurfaced. Rocker arm assembly was sent out and rebuilt. I am using same dizzy and other parts but installed a new clutch plate and pressure plate.... all for about $2200 including fluids, rattle cans and such. Ill be posting some pics to the thread in my signature a little later tonight after I organize my photos...

If i can fall under 3k i will be happy. We shall see. I start a build page this week and keep you all posted.

Thanks for your inputs.

Sounds like your heart is set on a rebuild but have you considered buying a good used f. They don.t comeup for sale on a regular basis but whenthey do most go for around $500 or so. I paid $600 for mine and it has turned out to be a strongrunner
