Did an oil change today and decided to wipe down the oil from my rear main seal leak while I was down there... I came back an hour later and noticed a red bead of fluid coming out of the tranny seep hole where the engine mates with the tranny... At first I thought it was tranny fluid because it is red and its coming out if the tranny, but to my surprise its coolant.... Wtf? I am about to pull the dust cover from front of tranny to see if I can see anything else....Anyone ever see this or have this coolant leak seeping out if this tranny seep hole.... Metal coolant lines and phh looked good, I don't think its runoff from coolant lines....its coming from seep hole as mentioned....

could be a freeze plug in the back of the block leaking under the flex plate running down the block and out the weep hole if you say all the lines look good

Oh that would F'ing suck.. Would the freeze plug be located in between the block and the tranny hump, in other words I would have to seperate the engine from the tranny to fix? I just wiped everything down again and opened the dust cover and there was absolutley no red fluid/oil as I wiped inside with a white terry cloth towel. I also had the wifey start the cruiser as I laid underneath the tranny and nothing seems to be coming out the seep hole after I wiped down.. I'll check back in a little while.

Yep for me, I had the exact same thing, at fist thought it was ATF, since both are red, but after double checking it was coolant from the rear heater lines leaking down the transmission. Since you can't see the rear heater lines I was worried it was the back of the head and an external HG leak so I pulled the trigger on a HG job.

Exact same thing just happened on my 80. It was coolant. But not from the PHH (which had just been replaced) but from the next hose up the pipe from the PHH. The coolant was sneaking down and dripping off in the same place as yours.

Were you able to swap hose without much trouble? Still haven't checked to see what hose your talking bout...

Oh yeah, that one is easy. It's up high on the firewall in plain sight. Just follow the heater bypass hose upwards from the PHH, and it's the next rubber hose in the line. This may or not be your problem, but it was for me, and the coolant was dripping slowly down and following a path that led it to the same spot where your drip manifests itself. Like you, I first thought it to be tranny fluid.

Thanks for the input fort....After spending some time looking around all the heater hoses, I glanced at the phh and sure enough there was dry coolant stains all along the hose and block... I dont know if this is the culprit, but I decided to finally after 240k miles change the phh with a kit from one of the vendors here that I have had on my shelf for about 7-8 years, talk bout putting it off till next weekend....:D I also installed my koso slim temp guage.. Do you guys think that a leak/coolant runoff from the phh can trick down to tranny seep hole? I hope its fixed... Thanks for all the input guys....

Do the heater hoses run down towards the tranny hump or are they the ones just visible on the firewall?

Both, you have lines that enter the firewall and also that run above the transmission between the body and transmission. The lines have a tendency to die and that is why many people opt for rear heater delete if in a warmer climate.

Thanks....I'm gonna look into the rear heater delete....
