Mysterious Metal Ring in Front Axle (2 Viewers)

So if this ring is only there to support the shafts during installation, it it possible/reasonable to build a makeshift support outside the axle housing to brace the shafts and make sure they go in parallel until the splines mesh? Idk.

Yes, but it would have to be inboard of the cv joint. Not really feasible.
