Well this past weekend got some maintenance done on the 60. Replaced the rear pinion seal...with much greatful knowledge from the Master Alan. Couldn't of done it without him. Haven't driven it enough to see if the seal will take care of the flange groove or not. To fill the rest of ya in...my rear flange has a groove in it, so if the seal doen't fix it, I'll have to replace the flange. I was a 1-1/2 nanner job. And then I yanked out my Radiator and had it boiled and welded. Thought it would solve my overheating problem but it didn't. So my next move is to test the fan....Does any one have a regular metal fan I could borrow. I wanna take my fan off with the clutch and put a straight fan on there and see if that solves it. If not then it's off to change the water pump. Tryin to eliminate one possibility at a time.

This weekend I plan on gettin a plate for the 40 and JP and I are gonna go on a trip up to into the MT's to test her before the trip to tellico. Only a few minor things to repair on the 40...Reweld the muffler so I don't get stuck in 1st gear again. Test the Vaccum. Modification of a carb mount. And replace the Valve cover gasket on the f engine....Anyone got an extra one of these they are willin to sell, other wise I'll just order one?

Chuck

Also the magnificent JP helped me with my wrenchin this weekend...couldn't of done it with out him.

I think I might have one too Chuck. Of course I might need my tire you borrowed back for starters. If JP doesnt have one I'll have him look in my stuff.

Don't worry you'll get your tire back, it's still on the trailer...haven't gone to the dump...that's on the to-do list for friday.

Its cool man I'm not to worried about it. Just let me know on the gasket so i can have JP look for you.

Dang , that over heating is a regular gremlin for you. Is the thermostat
OK? Have you replaced the fluid in your fan clutch? That helped with
our 60.
Why a carb mount mod? Muffler controlled gearbox?
Just keep after your problems and you'll get there. One by one. :)

Yeah I am buyin a fan with fan clutch from a guy on the board here along with his water pump...he converted to a V8. Didn't know you could replace the fluid in them, and I replaced the thermostat a few months ago. So that's also why I wanted to do the regular fan to see if that is the problem. The carb mount is cause JT outfitters 32/36 carb mount sucks, and I have a vaccum issue with it beacuse I can't tighten it down properly. So I'm gonna make one so I can get to the nuts with a wrench. And the 3 on the tree linkage is right above where the header mets the muffler, and JP's weld on the muffler "holder" broke and when it did the muffler moved enough where it caught the linkage and I got stuck in 1st gear. So I need to weld it on better and probably put a spacer in there somewhere to keep it from happening again.

Yeah, the fan has fluid in the unit. It leaks out over time.
Takes two bottles of goop you get from Rick. Mondo big
screw heads like on a motor bike. You need an impact
driver to loosen the things.

About the carb mount. I had my surfaces machined.
It helps greatly. The pieces are cast. That nasty to reach
nut on the near side can be reached and tightened
with a thinwall socket slipped on and turned by a right
angle screwdriver. Ain't NO ratchet will fit in there.
An open end wrench doesn't work either. I found the
socket and screwdriver combo after pulling most of my hair
out.
I've heard some have too long of bolts which bottom out or some
such thing. I got mine from MAF like 15+ years ago. It
sucked air from poor casting too. Hence the machining.
Good luck.

Glad to hear ya ain't shifting via a muffler. ;)

Keep on truckin'.......

Cool, didn't even think of that...that would save me some dough.

my next purchase is going to be a metal lathe. That way I can weld this crap that keeps wearing down and then turn it to it's original size. I've got two speedi sleeves comming tomorrow.

Just A Little Rubber Thing

Chuckster:

I had similar overheating probs: Found out that the DAPO (dumb-ass previous owner) had installed the thermostat incorrectly (so much for TOYOTA trained specialists).

He put it in without the little rubber gasket and placed it upside down. I would start here first. Change your thermo while your at it and test it in a pot of hot water with a thermometer. Put the pot of water with the new thermostat on your kitchen burner. Using a cooking thermometer, watch for the thermostat to open (it will do it pretty quickly) when the water comes up to the specified temp (180 degrees, I think).

Good luck!

Chuck you need to get a speedi sleeve for the pinion flange. That should fix your problem.

You know thats a good point. I've used Speedi sleeves a few times but always hate to pay the cost of them. You know it's a cheap part that SOR soaks you to buy but about half the cost of a new RDF. Sometime I just hate Capitalism especially when its going instead of comming! :crybaby:

Totally agree Alan. That part has to cost them maybe .50. It's a ripoff and they know it. BUt it's still half the price of the other option.

Yeah I replaced my thermostat with an advanced auto one, and put it in the way it said...but I don't remember a rubber thing in it...but it's been a few months, I may pull it and see if it works anyhow. I do have the gasket in there.

#18

Is that rubber thing the #18 on there..if so I don't think I have that in there.

Alex must of had to work hard today, he didn't respond back to me or he is too busy  Does any one know if I can make this rubber thing. Kinda hard to tell what it looks like on that SOR page. I was thinkin if I cut a piece of 3/8 hose that would do it. Wonder if I can get somethin like that at advanced and get it PDQ'd. Other option would be to rip the t-stat out if I take it to tellico...but plannin on the 40 as long as it does good on the trip friday. . I'll check back later....there is a harbor frieght and tools next to the hotel...gonna go look at all the cool stuff there. Later, Chuck

Chuck, I have this gasket you are looking for. I think SOR calls it a Thermo Gasket. You can get it anytime just let me know.

Cool thanks Alan, JP, Richard said he thought he had one..look thru his stuff and see if ya find one. If not I have this Goo that Keith at toyota gave me. So we could get the old one snugged up and straighten that cover out a little then put that goo on there. Should be good, I don't think it leaks oil anymore out of there, but don't wanna chance it on the trail.
