Hi every one fist of all greetings from Costa Rica.

Everything started earlier this year when I start loving the Fj's,

Here in Costa Rica you can see many 40s in the streets and now are more common to see them. Some in Bad conditions, but still running and some other in good or perfect conditions. And what happened here in Costa rica with this type of car is that if you have it clean and in perfect conditions the owner won’t sell it or if they sell the car will be very expensive otherwise you can find a piece of junk or all rusted.

I'm passionate for the old school cars and my girlfriend started to work for a Toyota advertising company, she showed me a calendar with a nice BJ40 lifted and I said at that moment why not to have one?

I had a Nissan frontier lifted with 31s Mts 4x2 but I was not happy with that car. I decided to sell the car and start looking for something 4x4 options.

I was not in a rush to have one pretty soon, but I was sure that I wanted to find a nice car or at least in good shape with no rust. (my first TOYOTA).

I went to a national Website called CRAUTOS.COM where you can see pictures and information about them.

Every single day I went to my job, the routine was to open the website and to check if some other cars were uploaded.

Nothing calls my attention. Just one car and was a Red BJ40.

I called the owner and he told me that he had someone interested in the car and that probably the car was going to be exported to USA. At that moment I felt like I was not having another option to get that car that I felt in loved.

I looked for other cars all the week and I found a FJ45, I love it in pictures so I went to the owners house to see the car and for my lucky day, the car was all rusted and the paint was all cracked.

I was so disappointed and on the road to home I was thinking if it was a good Idea to have a BJ40.

On mid-week I looked into CRautos website again and nothing comes up, so I looked into another websites and after a few calls I found red BJ40, I set up a meeting for Saturday morning to check the car.

On Tuesday I received a private call and as I was working, I could not take the call.

I was not sure who called me because it was a private number. For some reason on the first Red BJ40 that I looked since the very beginning comes to my head and something told me to call the guy and see if the USA guy, buy it .

I called the owner again and he told me that he still have the car, that he tried to call me but the call didn’t was not effective, he told me that if I still was interested on the BJ40 and I told him YES. Also that if I wanted to see it I should drive 5 hrs to his home and buy it on Saturday otherwise the car was going to be sell.

On that moment everything comes to my head and I said: "for some reason the car is still there" "is the one I like it since the very beginning".

I call the owner again and I decided to go on Saturday. But I had another ISSUE: “The appointment on Saturday for the other BJ40” too.

I call the other guy move the appointment for Friday in order to have a second opinion for both cars.

I went to Friday appointment and the car was not what I was planning to see, everything comes to head and said “now I had a clear view for the other car, probably is what I really wanted to have and also that was there waiting for me”.

On Saturday morning I woke up early and mi 5 hrs trip started with all my Ideas 100% positive. After 5 hrs trip I arrived to the place and the owner arrived with the car.

In that moment was love at first sight.

More to come……

Thank you Mike.

continue with the story.

That Saturday I bought the car and we did all the legal process as it has to be done here is Costa Rica.

Its is very funny because for some reason I was reading this topic
My Costa Rican BJ40 search begins
and Mr Cimarron posted when he was looking for his car here is Costa Rica.

I have a small company for Car polishing named PAINTDETAILER (you can find pictures on facebook for all the cars I've worked on) and as a car detailer I can not see imperfections on my paint.

Fists thing I did was to wash it with Full Meguiars Kit and add some extra wax. Hope this weekend to fully work all my paint but this is the first result with no effort.

Continue with the story.

One of the main things I notice is that the Cluster is not working at 100%, No temp, No Gas, No oil.
I talk with previous owner and he told me that the car originally was 24V, and he swapped into a 2B engine 12V, he changed the alternator, stator and other stuff to 12V. I decided to look more information in this site and I found that there was a solution for the cluster.

When I went home, I removed the cluster and I checked that it has a 24v cluster and that was the main reason why is not working. I talked with with bj40green "Rudi" he advised that I must remove the resistor in the back in order to work properly so I remove it, also changed the Fuses to a new ones however Parking lights, 1/4 light, dash lights are gone and fuses are Ok , at least I have Fuel signal but only marks to 1/4 gas and do not move more, I do not know how to proceed with this right now.

I talk with a guy who knows about this cars here is Costa Rica and he told me that I must change the OIL, GAS and TEMP for the 12V gauges, not sure if I have to do it or if he just wanted to sell me this gauges because here in Costa Rica are hard to find. (I really appreciate if someone could give me more ideas or if this guy is correct that I must change the gauges) also I found a new 12 V cluster but not sure if I should buy a new one or wait for the correct person to check this and convert my 24V cluster into a 12V cluster. I read here in this website that many of the guys fixed this particular issue.

You don't have to change the FUEL and TEMP gauges. They are for 12V and that's why the resistor is there. FYI, there are no 24V FUEL and TEMP gauges. They don't exist. Only the OIL gauge is 12V or 24V.
The OIL gauge is 24V but will work in a 12V set up. Just the reading is a bit lower.
Here you can see the 12V versus 24V set up:

You can send the cluster to me to check it out if you want.

Thank you Rudi, Actually I'll send it to you, or maybe I can go to playas del coco jeje because at this moment I'm not sure how much fuel I have and every time I use it I have to put diesel, and I don't like to running with out knowing how much fuel I have.

"El Jefe" that's how I named him do not have any emblem, I'm planning to buy all of them next month. I was wanting to make the full Paint polish first and after put them all.

I just bought a nice 15x10 Mickey Thompson Classic II Rims, they are all dirty but sooner they have some paint on it with 33 inch tires.
