That sucks. At least you were able to get it figured out.

Hopefully all it needs is new brushes. That's the only thing I've ever had to replace on a Toyota alternator. They're cheap and easy to replace.:)

It went out intermittently do you know if they would indicate brushes or regulator? Also its only 1 year old Denso rebuild from toyota.

Joe, Nick and I found out we all use the same rebuild guy in Kent so Joe is going to drop it off for him. He is real good and only replaces whats needed, or soon to be needed.

Good work Joe, should have let you take the lead!

Last year I was having similar issues w/ my '85 truck. I rarely drive it and the battery was old so I replaced it w/ a new one. I thought I was good but a couple days later it wouldn't start. Jump started it and while running it would sometimes put out 14V depending on how hard I tapped on the alternator. Pulled it out and took it to the local parts store to have it tested. Yup it's bad. Pulled the brushes out and they were worn out. Replaced 'em w/ new ones from my parts stash and had it tested again and it passed. This was my 2nd time replacing 'em on the truck and IIRC the truck has 250K on it. I've replaced all the brushes on all my mini trucks 'cuz they all have over 200k on 'em including my Acura w/ 270K+ miles. I found out my Acura uses the same brushes as my trucks so it was pretty funny when I went to my local dealer to order 'em and told the guy what vehicle I was working on.

The only way to know, is to take it apart and test all the components. arndog123 nailed it, it's cheaper than a new unit from Denso (which Acura and Toyota use). Why not test, buy what you need and learn along the way?

Mahalos to Kyle, Nick,& Joe for stopping by and helping me out. Was a bitch taking the alt out, but better now than never.

Any of you guys think the aftermarket alts are just as good as OEMs?

It's probably a case of you get what you pay for. If you spend decent money on an after market one, I don't see why it wouldn't be just as good.

Oem $275
Aftermarket $125

Aftermarket probably comes with some sort of warranty. I'd try it. If its s***ty I'd take it back and get a refund.
