heya

my 60 has been sitting for a few weeks and went to start it the other day and *click click click*

I assumed dead batteries (its 24V).. so I unhooked them and charged them both up, battery charger said each was 100%, the voltmeter in the dash was saying 24V but when i tried to start it, the same *click click*. The classic dead battery noise.

After some poking and prodding I could get the starter motor to give a small laboured crank, but it still sounded just like i had 2 dead batteries.

Tuesday arvo im gonna have a go at jump starting and roll starting it, but i want to know what the problem is because it will be my DD very soon.

Cheers for the help guys!

Starter motor contacts! See my thread from a week or so ago!

I would say its the startet too. A bad contact at the battery terminal also bad leads can give the same effect
Kon do you still want the coil and oil cap for the 45? Ive been waiting to see your 60 at work but I know why its not there now:D
Send me a PM for your next work date

It sounds like a pain but have the batteries removed or tow it to a shop and have the batteries profesionally inspected and chaged. Have them load tested. This will tell if the plates are sulfated or not. The battery voltage under a load tester should not drop below 10 volts if thay are good batteries.

Cruiser_guy was 100% correct!!

pulled my starter motor and followed the FSM (which doesnt say anything about contacts btw!) One of the contacts was completely melted and the copper ring on the plunger was covered in crap and a little corroded.
Took the contacts to a bunch of auto shops, they were all useless until one suggested a shop that turned out to be a wholesaler for all things auto-electrical. $15 later i had 2 new contacts. Couldnt get the copper ring so i buffed the old one, good as new!

Sorry i didnt take pics, my olds have the camera. Took about 5 hours, cept an hour and a half was driving around looking for contacts!!

Thanks all for the help and suggestions!

Yep, the FSM doesn't mention it and it's not in the dealers parts catalog either!! My other thread has all the part numbers including the one for the plunger. I don't know if the numbers for for "down under" though.

I found a slick battery load tester at the local "Battery Direct" shop. Think it was under $40 cdn. It has an analog meter and 2 clamps like a booster cable set. I think the draw down is only a 10 second test but it is a good quick check. I have one at work and at home.
