Alright guys I guess this will be my project thread as well.

So I bought the truck, and last Monday I ordered a waterpump (leaking), thermostat, few things it needed such as window regulator, tail light cover, fuel cap, wiper blades, fuel filter, oil and oil filter, air filter, bunch of coolant for a flush, maybe a few other things

That was Monday

Tuesday I lost my job! Horrible timing

So anyway I'm in the project now but I have time and can't yet spend money. Have savings so I won't need to sell my Landcruiser but I do have a mortgage and can't start ordering parts

I'm new to old cars and realized a few things now that I've got a bunch of it apart.

1) I should probably do my hoses while it's torn apart

2) I should probably resolve the power steering leak as well.

Everything is nice and saturated. Is there anyway to diagnose and locate a power steering leak at this phase? Logic tells me to clean up the mess and check for leaks after driving but since the radiator is already ripped apart that's not really an option

What I'd like to do is get a parts list together so when I have income again I can get everyThing I need

Thanks everyone

Sucks dude and sorry to hear about the employment issues. Hopefully that gets resolved quickly.
To answer your question, yes if you do not know the age of the hoses then I would replace... there is a fat hose that goes between the lower water pump and the lower radiator (connected by a metal pipe that branches off to the oil cooler) that should be replaced while this is apart as it is an absolute PITA to get to . Contact ONUR (@beno) for the proper part(s) for that stuff.

As for the PS leak, you want to be careful of allowing it to leak as it WILL eventually seize the smog pump below it and then you will be in a world of hurt if you have emissions regulations. There are a couple options out there so try and figure out what you want to do. I would either see if you can locate the leak. If you do and it is somewhere easy like hose then keep it. If the shaft itself is leaking then others have had mixed luck getting it to seal properly again. You could see about doing the Saginaw swap (see @orangefj45 for the Saginaw conversion kit).

Thanks for the tip. I've gotten all the hoses off, suppose it'll just sit as is for now...

I may just leave the project open and order a new power steering pump when i get another job. I think it's the pump itself leaking, there fluid everywhere.

I don't need emissions inspection but how would I tell if my smog pump is seized? I just got the truck so no telling how long it's been leaking.

I'll start digging on smog pumps, I don't have ththink slightest clue what it actually is or does

Oh you would know if it was seized as it would not move. You have to remember that there is a belt running that and the waterpump so that may be the reason that the waterpump was going out. If you don't have emissions where you live then I would get ride of the pump and go with one of JimC (known as @FJ40Jim around here and see his small vendor page) smog pump pulley replacements.

It spins freely. The waterpump was doing its thing just fine, it was just leaking thats all

Ive done minimal research on desmogging the Fj60. Once I made it to "only do this if you understand each and every smog component and vaccuum line so you can diagnose issues" I decided to let it be.

Ill look into JimC's mod and see if its something I can handle.

I love this forum and this community thus far. I was concerned at first from seeing so many people with immaculate and resto-modded FJs with tons of money into them- I spent $3000 on mine and its rusty and dirty....but I still feel welcomed and very much appreciate the help from you experienced and knowledgeable members. I havent been able to drive mine except for the 100 miles home but Ive been able to enjoy the ownership for sure.

Dude you are more like all of us than those "resto-mod" ones. While there are guys on here that put TONS of money into their trucks most of them started the same way are yours. Hell, I purchased mine a little over 3yrs ago for $1500 and was told by the PO that its brake booster was going out and there was a bit of surface rust but other than that it was fine. Low and behold that was pretty far from the truth BUT she was mechanically sound and has run incredibly since then with me doing work here and there and learning along the way. As long as you approach this as an investment and understand that takes work and this will more than likely NOT be just a turnkey and go type truck then you will be ahead of the game.

The JimC pulley is a pretty easy swap and there are a couple hoses that will need to be blocked off. Other option is to GUT the smog pump (if yours is still working I would NOT do this as it could go to someone in a smogged/emissions area that needs one). There is TONS of information on here so get acquainted with the search function and ask questions when you are stumped. Everyone is happy to help..

Oh and we like pictures!!

Thanks for the reassurance

So I can get a reman Ps pump for $75 from Rock auto...may to that route since it's hundreds of dollars cheaper to fix.

I called it a day since the weather is turning

Cleaned mating services as best as I could for installing the thermostat and waterpump tomorrow when I borrow a torque wrench

Then I'll need to wait for Friday to find out if I got a job and can order the hoses and Ps pump

Fingers crossed it doesn't hail it's ass off as forecasted....wishing I had a garage

Here ya go...
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 fj60 power steering pump and reservoir | eBay

When installing the new t-stat remember that there are TWO GASKETS.. there is the larger one that fits around the 4 bolts that mates the surfaces together but there is also an o-ring that goes over the top of the t-stat when installed. Plenty of other threads with proper depiction of this to help out.

Oh and good luck on Friday!

Thanks Greg I did confirm that I have both gaskets

Fingers crossed for Friday for sure

Alright water pump is installed, thermostat installed, ordering PS pump and hoses tomorrow.....

I'll try to find someone local with a stock 2F to get my vacuum lines sorted. It runs well enough but they are an absolute mess.

Can anyone tell me what color it is? I've found the color charts but none of them seem right.....

Oh and my buddy way over delivered on my new battery tray

Welcome and you have a great friend, for sure.

Enjoy the new ride, and keep plugging away at it. Get the drive train solid first, but you might want to keep an eye out for a new door, as that is weird and hard-to-fix rust on your door, and likely a lot cheaper to replace the door than to fix the rust. www.cruiseryard.com for things like that - but wait until you get a job.

Yeah that door rust is pretty nasty and in some really bad spots. Time to hit it with some rust converter and then start the hunt for some local replacement doors.
Any word on the job?

Since you are looking to desmog in the future it may be worthwhile to just start now.. You can leave things like the air injection rail attached while you get money and time together for the plugs and what not that go in its spots. Check my sig line as there is the DESMOG thread in my personal dropbox for the 60s. In there it gives what size line to get from places like McMaster-Carr or Boostcontroller.com. If you are planning to just replace the lines I would take them off one at a time and cut a new piece of the new stuff and replace.

I'll be keeping an eye out for a door and a tail gate for sure!
I got the job but unsure of a start date....time will tell

The vacuuum lines are such a mess it's definitely going to take time to figure out. The PO left it in a disaster.

Hey all, just an update on the truck. I'm out of town until Friday, and I will be attempting to drive my landcruiser 200 miles to my new home. Not a long drive, but it was only 120 miles after I got the truck that the waterpump started leaking (and I got laid off!) and had the truck parked.

Friday I will be wrapping up a test drive with a new waterpump, thermostat, powersteering pump and lines, and oil change. Hopefully friday goes well so I can trust it for the drive Saturday.

I broke a VTV while working on the truck. Mine looks green, but its labeled blue in this diagram I have found. Can someone confirm which one I need so I can reluctantly pay $15 for a new one?! My PC skills are lacking but it is the one in the picture just to the upper right of the fan.

Thanks!
