I picked up my 80 about 6 months ago. It had about 210k on it and needed a water pump but I got it for 2600.00. I instantly fell in love with it and did the water pump, complete tune up, and replaced all belts and hoses.

I took it to get it smogged and it failed miserably.

I pretty much deduced that the problem was with the egr. I couldn't find one. In fact I still can't. I found one used that leaks vacuum and caused a rough idle but not enough to not pass the emission test.

Finally I was ready to do something fun. I ordered up some old man emu springs pro comp shocks. Metaltech 4x4 sway bar drops castor plates, and iron pig off-road track bars[

So I have tuned and tuned and it won't go any faster. My next project will be gears and axle rebuild. I am running 35" tires but have been considering 529 gearing

Admirable, but you may have maxed the power you're gonna get out of the 3FE. The old saying is that, when properly maintained they'll run forever, but never very fast. I've totally baselined mine with 278,000 miles and she's still slow as Christmas. Runs great, but maxes out at about 75mph on the highway. Have to bury the pedal to merge with traffic.

Good luck and if you find any speed-secrets, please let me know.

I wasn't expecting miracles ... Just the power I lost by adding the 35" tall tires. I have had 2 offers to by the old girl and a ton of compliments on the cruiser. Needless to say I really like it and have added a huge list of upgrades I want to do in baby steps lol

Haha I actually printed that out and did all of that when I first got it ... I think mainly I want the low end torque back and I'm pretty sure gearing will do it

I just re geared my 3FE with 33s to 4.88s. Definitely has a snappier feeling, but it doesn't hold steep hills much better around town. Highway driving though is so much better. Last night I was driving into a strong wind and going up a hill at 69-70 at 2700 rpms in overdrive!

Haha this is a second vehicle for me .... Kind of a family camping rig. We kinda wanted a jeep unlimited but they are way too expensive and this thing came along and I figured why not. It has turned into something I'm having fun with. It is an extra vehicle for us so if I have to go fast I'll take something different.
