get those 34 inch x 9.5 SS's for your trail tires.
I love those things.
I like my tires like I like my women. Tall and skinny.
Funny because I have a girlfriend whos 5'3"

so, what you are saying is you like to wear your women out and then deal them every couple years for a newer design?

ahahah. I just like tall skinny tires and girls:)
SS's seem to wear really quick.
I get a kick out of all the guys that throw there big huge mudders on and drive 99 percent pavement. Its just to make their truck look tough. I figure I will just go the m55 route.

skinny tires have their place as do fats, it depends on what terrain you are traversing.
if it is "bottomless" mud (i.e. deeper than your diff clearence) then fats are best. if you can reach bottom then skinnies are best. those would be great for the wheeling i like to do.
How about something like this (Dunlop Grandtrek MT2):
2009 JIMROCK ROUND4

Too skinny?

I agree with what was said about switching between two sets of tires. Tires are a compromise unless you are going highway only or trail only.

An all terrain tire is a road tire that does ok on dirt roads. A mud terrain tire is better for 'all terrains' but doesn't really do any one thing that well. Most radials are not durable off road, some are worse than others.

I still run bfg m/t's since my trucks realistically spend at least 75% of their time on pavement, I don't tow my truck places, so a true trail tire hasn't made sense yet. With careful tire placement keeping visible sticks and rocks away from the sidewalls I've been reasonably happy (and lucky) with the bfg muds, decent traction and wear well on the street. I probably won't buy them again though.

I am still torn if I should buy m55s or Open country MTs
I am planning on the 255/85R/16 size (33.5 x 10)
I drive highway, logging roads, and some trails. I would be my summer tire.
I just want something tough that is trail capable.
do you think m55s will last a lot longer than the mts? I know the mts are a very hard compound.

IMHO, any tire will do what you want to do (just carry a spare, and a winch). The M55's should last longer than the MT... aren't they designed to last long, being a commercial tire? The Toyo MT are soft. They howl going down the road. Most MT's do though to varying degrees.

If you're a good driver, the AT tire will take you anywhere an MT tire will. The difference is not night and day in the mud, and on trails. It's incremental, and not always predictable. Both kinda suck as soon as you hit mud.

Lockers and a winch will do a lot more good than tires in getting you further down the trail :steer:

I don't have much experience with my Toyo MTs off-road, however. This is based on my experience BFGoodrich AT and MTs.

That's my $0.02. Maybe someone else has had a different experience?

ForealBoreal;

I just went through that decision and decided on the M55s. Cost was part of it, but I wanted a decent off-road tire that was strong and long lasting. The M55 fits what I want it to do quite nicely. They are not that noisy and are actually very smooth riding on the road.

I have seen lots of M55s around and was out in some pretty crazy spring snow with a friend in his BJ42 - we kept going right up to the point that the snow was so much snow being pushed by the bumper that we couldn't go any farther. I was quite impressed.

I am mainly thinking of them because they are tough as nails.
What did you pay for a tire john?

John, can you post some pictures of your cruiser with the M55's? If my truck didn't come with the Toyo MT's, I'd probably be trying to make a similar decision.

Sure, will do that a little later.

Don't remember what they cost, I bought two sets of tires at one time and I can't find the invoice. When I find it, I'll send you the info.

In the mean time, here are photos of the tires - 255 85R 16s on factory 16x6jj alloys. Lift is as described in my long lost build thread.

I like the KM2's on my Taco. Used to run the A/T's and they didn't do that well off road. They seem to howl a bit on the highway but that is fine. I will be putting another set of KM2's on my truck when these wear out I really like them and the rubber side lugs make the sidewall stronger. But on the 45 I think I have narrowed my tire down to a Toyo Open country M/T 37x14.5R15. I'll see how those do when its time to drive it out of the shop and not just push around a frame.

your luck you got those rims in a 16. My dad unfortunately has them in a 15.
I can't wait to see your 77 done up. Build thread?

There was a set of Craigslist the other day for $125 - guess the seller didn't know what they were worth. I missed out on that one:doh:

I have a few more of the skinny 16" rims around back - they're going on the 77 I think ;)

Thanks for posting those pics John. Looks good.

I found a picture of a 70 series with skinny Dunlop Grantrek MT2's (not sold in North America... bias ply?).

I'd really like to find out what size these are. Would these be 16 or 17 inch wheels?
