Interesting sorry to hijack but i saw some tires on a Hi Lux today and loved them so.........
How do 33in tall and 12.5in wide tires handel on a HZJ73 are they doggy with being so wide?
Will i need a big offset to stop them from rubbing?
ive got a turbo so power wont be an issue.

wide and you need a lift, skinny and you can go 34s with no lift.

2.5 lift looks good anyway.

I run 33x12.5R15 on a daily basis, they give no issues on road, drive well no wobbles or anything. They are Maxxis Bighorns, which I am VERY happy with. Couped some hard abuse, done alot of km's and still have good tread left, even perform well enough offroad for a mild muddy.

Yep.... I have a set of bighorns too. They are a really good tyre. Much better than the Cooper stt that I had on before. Bighorns are cheaper, perform better in the wet and give a better ride than my old stt's.

Nice guys im looking at some 33in bighorns and was going to go 10.5 but 12.5 seems sweet ive got a 2.5in lift so that is all good. Boogie and Hulsty got any pics of the 12.5s?

Hey NMRN, I don't have pics cause I've only had the bighorns on for a few weeks and haven't taken pics of the cruiser lately. I might be wrong but I think the bighorns only come in 12.5 in the 33's. I wanted to go 10.5 to improve the handling of the cruiser but they don't make em.

I've had bfg all terrains, Cooper STT's and now the Bighorns and reckon the bighorns are the best. There a hundred bucks less than the other two brands too which is good. Time will tell if the bighorns can go the distance but I heard and read good reports on the BigHorns.

Cheers mate,

Gav.

these are mud tires to me:
they do extremely well in snow too but on ice they suck.

You are comparing Maxxis Bighorns to the Cooper STT / I tried to put a set on. They went back to the United states as fast as they came. Now the COOPER STT that is a tire ! Also from the U.S. I thinks you guys may have had the older STTs
Round
Self Cleaning / wet snow
LOW NOISE
Can Reach speeds of 130km/h on a 35" Im not talking vroom and my EGTs are 1150F , IM talking steady 130km/h for several minutes.

I have been fxxxing with Mud Tires for 24 years and have never been happier.

The correct tire to run is so dependent on the terrain and conditions, it is hard to make a recommendation to anybody... The problem with mud tires, is that they are the absolute pits on ice, or in conditions right around freezing where the slush turns to ice under the tire. Makes them useless as a year round tire in my area.

Yes - but when you find a tire that is good for snow/ice/mud/rocks and high way/street driving then let me know please:) Bottom line is you buy a tire for what your purpose is, an "all around good" tire is going to be marginal at best for true off roading. Waynes tires are good for what he does but I am pretty sure they are s*** for what I do, my tires are great for what I do but now I have to install them at the trail head because they suck ass on the road, BFG muds - I can blow a side wall out of those in no time where we go.

Best thing to do is have 2 sets - one for DD and one for your wheeling - IMO.

only one way to find out <wink wink>
i agree completely with your second point.

I have considered them - and am still considering trying them but I have to wear these superswampers out first.

Can you air yours down - to what psi?

since i don't have bead locks i run them at stock pressure 18 psi but i have air'd down to 12 in the past, i didn't like the on road feel as well as the sidehilling 'thrill'...

they ain't for everyone but i have fell in love with them over the last few years. i can idle around swampers in mud and clay, i can idle up loose dirt hills but ice is scary. in the snow, damn, they rock.

The SS definitely aren't all that great. I have a year or two before I need another set. one more trip up north and then I start tearing the truck apart for some long over due work - back in action probably in august.

i have watched the Truxus in action and if i was buying a trade off tire i would go with them.
i drove a 35" set from Calgary down to SanDiego a few years back in a ragtop 70, the soft top made more noise than the tires and i could steer with one finger. once there i gave them a brief tryout and was pleased...

I have heard that and am considering them, I don't want to go wide either - so I'll have to see what is available.
