I'm thinking of buying BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2 tires, size 33x10.5x15 for
my BJ 74. I was wondering what their road holding capability is like on wet road or
highway?.

BFG = meh.... there are better out there. But tall and narrow is a good way to go.

Have a look at Toyo MTs.

16" rims/tires are better - tires are stronger, lower rolling resistance, often better tire wear.

??? Really? BFGs are the best thing out here the KM2s seem really good my mates got them on his surf.
My BFG all terrains have lasted forever and are great
Why dont you guys like them?
If i had the chance to but a set of cheap 33in KM2s i would in a heartbeat.

I have a set of bfg 255 85 16's on my 70.

Had those tires for close to ten years now, I've had them on 3 different trucks and I bought them used.

Damn things seem to have stopped wearing...

However....they are USELESS in the snow, one of these days I'm going to go with a different tire, if only for a change..

I've had several sets of BFGs, and they are good on the road but just don't hold up off road.

We say, here, that BFG stands for "BIG F$cking Gash" - as in the crap sidewalls like to return these tires back their natural state: flat.

Too "notchy" on the road to be enjoyable.

I have put the COOPER STTs through some tough testing. Nothing "packs" in the tread except for that greasy mud that sticks like lithium greese. BFGs went out 20 years ago.

I run Mickey Thompson, they are pretty popular down here.

305/70R16 (about 33x12) MTZ, based on my mechanic's recommendation, they seem to work well but are my first tyres on my first 4WD so I have nothing to compare them to.

Wider tyres seem to be the choice for mud here, I'm going to go to 37/38 soon, probably something 13.5 or more wide, possibly up to 15.5 inch wide.

The new BFG you mention seem to be getting good reviews and I have heard others say they are good, so I would make sure any opinion you listen to is based on those newer BFGs, not some 20 year old BFG tyre or whatever is apparently in or out of fashion at the moment.

Anyone had any experience with Goodyear MT/R?

I'd love to see some pics of 255/85R16's on a 70 series... they're the size I'd like.

I had some 35 mtr's on my 45. Liked them a lot, seemed to work really well in snow, but didn't have them long enough to comment on wear...but I don't think it was all that great...

there's a couple crappy pics of my 70 with 255's in the "garage" tab to the left. but not really good enough to help you I think.

Nice size tho, I have 411's , no turbo and it drives great.

I've got good year mtr they came on my cruiser when I got it ther reasonable quiet on the road for a mud Tyre there are wearing pretty quick ,but they have nothing on the bfg AT that I had on my 75 for beach and forest sand offroad driving anyways

the first generation where beautiful tire, the second generation were crap. did they make a new one?
good year knock offs.
me, i like the TOYO tires
but
i like a street tire on the road and a dedicated mud tire for off the road.
the best of both world, and i use that description very lightly, is the Super Swamper Truxus. well, at least i liked them. quiet on road (for a mud tire), wicked off road (for a streetable tire) and seem to last a long time.
Have a look Kumho MT , pretty good tyre and long lasting .

The Truxus is a great tire - except they are hard to impossible to balance (mine took 8 oz. new) and go out of round with age to the point I could not go over 80 kph without the truck shaking (50% tread left). If Interco could improve quality they would have an awesome tire. I moved over to the MTR kevlar.

Thanks guys for the advice and sugustions. John at Radd would a 16" factory alloy wheel from a 80 series work on a BJ 74 ? I have 15"x7 Toyta alloys with a minus 20 offset on my truck and their fine with a 32" tyres.

The 80 series 16x8 steel rims we get on our aus spec 80 series fit on the 75 series if the aloys are the same of set should fit on 74

Like John said - wanna blow a side wall out then take a BFG off road, very weak. The BFG muds wear fast, the a/t's are useless at 50-60 percent wear. And - they don't balance worth a s*** - for 200-260 a tire that is retarded.

I have 13X36 Super swamper TSL's and I hate them on the road but love them in the mud, rock and anything between, I have golfball size chunks out of mine and they just keep going. But - now I have to put them on the back of my truck and drive them to the trailhead - then install them for the trail, no big deal as by them time I swap my tires the guys have just aired down.

My next tires will be 35's and narrow, the 13's are too wide, 36's too tall and heavy, 34's to small - 35's just right???
