MS170 bar oiling

Here is a picture of the oil pump itself. One side has a groove in it. This is the suction side of the pump. the other side has a hole in it. This si the discharge side.

If it set too deep in the housing or not deep enough, it will not oil properly since the discharge hole will not line up.

There is a Groove machined into the pump. The hole that the pump is pressed into has an image embossed into it that should match the pump exactly.

I will tear down my MS 180 and get a measurement and a picture of the embossed area for you.

My thanks D'Animal. I shall take it apart and see what I can figure out.

Tony.

I know this is mostly a STIHL forum ;) but I have one of those green $99 Poulan 2150 saws I use around the house for small stuff and it has a slightly different oiling problem. First no oil to the bar and second any oil put in the tank ends up leaking out in the case after I put the saw up. I use it so little that I just oil the bar with a squirt bottle of oil. :D I want to get it fixed, any tips for fixing it? Planning on taking it apart this weekend...

Sounds like you have a bad oil line or a cracked tank.

Poulan is built by Husqvarna and in many models is the same saw between the brands, just a different color.

OK I'll check those two things once I get the clutch off and can get to the hose.

I had no idea Poulan was a Husqvarna product! Guys have laughed at this saw for years but I have never had any trouble out of it except for the oiling issue...

Here is what I came up with when I was looking for a parts breakdown for you on your Poulan 2150.

Model # 2150
POULAN

Thanks Dan for all your help. I haven't got round to doing it yet, but will in a day or so. Lots of mowing to do etc.

Well it does exist at least in my saw case. :D Here is the data sticker for it.
I guess they don't call them disposable saws for nothing...

No worries, I have not had time to tear mine apart and get you the height measurement.

Hi Dan,

Then don't take it apart, as I think i have mine fixed. Today was the first time I got the handle off, to get a good look at the pump area. I had drained the oil tank of course, but there was still oil in the suction of the pump, and when I pried out the oil supply elbow, out dropped an oily blob of what appeared to be very fine sawdust. Cleaned and flushed everything out, and used low pressure air too. Refilled tanks and went cutting. Only cut a few logs, as it's raining up here in Canada (At least not snow yet) but there appeared to be enough oil on the chain. When I looked in the tanks, the oil had gone down noticeably, so I think that was the problem.

Many thanks for your help, as I had contacted Stihl Canada, from their website, about 3 weeks ago, and I'm still waiting for an answer.

Thanks again. Tony

This is going to sound strange but look and feel the blob of stuff that you got out of the line. Cheap (less quality) bar and chain lubricant has a ton of paraffin in it and it will actually glob together when it sits for an extended period of time or it gets cold. The glob is just like sending grease down your drain, it plugs things up a bit.

If this is the case, Cutting or thinning the oil with a little bit of diesel or kerosene will thin the oil enough to help prevent it.

I'm glad you got the problem solved but sorry to hear the dealer did not fix it correctly. If I were you, I would take the repair bill and the glob of sawdust back to thier store and see what they can do about making it right with you.

Thanks for the info Dan regarding cheap oil. Perhaps that was my problem. I will stick with Stihl oil in future. Unfortunately, I wiped up the oil with a rag, so really don't have it anymore. I'm quite happy as is with a working saw.

I've always been confused re: Pouland model #'s this one is listed as a model # 2000, why does it have more cc's than the 2150?

Or that a date code?

That is the emission label

It means it meets the 2000 (Year) USA (Not the UK or Europe, they have more stict laws than California does) PH1 (Phase 1, since it was a phase in period and allowances were give to manufacturers)
