Can someone please give me more specifics on using and FJ60 top plate on the FJ40 to move the shifter back. It seems that I need the top plate frpm an FJ60 81-83. Does it just bolt on? Will the fj40 shifter work. If someone out there has done this, I would really appreciate the info. I have a 78 FJ40 with the factory 4speed coupled to a sbc
Thanks
Wes

Hey chief if you move the shifter back and use the stock 40 shifter aren't you going to have to reach into the back seat to get to second and forth?

I don't have first hand experience with this, but it is my understanding that the top covers will interchange. Just a bolt and go situation.

Now comes to the real reason for my post. I have an H42 tranny out in my shop, which if my memory is correct is out of an 83 FJ60. I'll have to go out there this evening and dig it out to look at it. I had never thought about it, but I may need the 40 series top cover on that tranny. My plan is to mate that tranny to a Ranger OD, and then to a diesel motor (GM 6.2?). I'll have to think that through as the length of the three things may require the shift tower to be forward on the tranny in order for the shift tower to come up close to the correct place.

If after thinking/measuring for this and I do need the 40 shift tower it may be an advantage to both of us to get together and compare trannys. I'm not that far from you, 1 to 1 1/2 hours, depending on what part of Portland you are in.

will a top cover from a 4 speed fit a 5 speed transmission?

I have the sbc conversion and my shifter comes out under the heater. This conversion will move it back to just about the right location to exit the tranny tunnel cover.

Did you serve in the Navy? If so thanks for your service and I do appreciate that you knew I am a Chief in the world's most powerful navy. Well, retired now.
