Hi All,

How have people gone about moving the rear shock mounts on a FJ73 style rig to put the shocks onto a greater angle allowing the fitment of longer shocks?

As my car sits with 50mm lowered rear bump stops I can only fit a 10'' travel shock and I think I will need more!

These are the shocks I will be fitting, hopefully the 12'' model or more!

Locktup 4x4 International - Catalog

As space is tight I was thinking of welding a pin to a curved plate to match the existing tube then welding it where required, or should I be drilling the existing tube and running a pin all the way through?

Any issues welding in the vincity of the fuel tank?

thanks

do it right once.
remove the original shock
compress the spring to its max compression - measure
bring the spring to full droop - measure

now minus one inch to the min and add 1 inch to the max. eg. full compression is actual 12" the min is 11", if the full droops is 23" then the max will be 24" so then shop for a shock that has a full compression of 11" and a full droop of 24". it will fit into the stock location. Rancho has a listing of all the different eyes and travel for their shocks on line somewhere. use it and order your proper shock. going overkill is for looks and not practical.

but if you want to change the mounts for want and not need then go for it. the axle will travel back about 1" under full compression so allow for the twist of the shick when designing the mount. if you do not allow for the full range of travel then you can bust off the eye mount on the shock.

I havent had a chance to measure extension yet, only the compression which is going to end up about 50mm to long for a 12'' bilstien. Once I get my 75 series rears in I should be able to measure the extension and see how much length I really need. At the moment with 2'' shackles on 2'' leaves the shocks I have now max out before the springs
