Gents,

I kinda contemplating of moving my '78 OEM fuel tank that is currently mounted under passenger side seat to under the tub. Anyone can share their experience (would be great with picuter)?

Or, shall i use an aftermarket gas tank or maybe a newly fabricated one out of a stainless steel sheet.

Can anyone also share picture of their 40 with the original under the tub mounted tank?

TIA

Cheers!

i was wandering the same thing

there's nothing wrong with the current set-up. it's only the smell of the fume that my wife is giving me a sharp look especially when it needs to roll-up the glass windows.

Check the fuel Seperator. The stock '78 is made of plastic. Mine had a broken connector releasing fumes into the cab. I replaced it and no longer smell fuel.

It's number 45 in this SOR diagram. Should be just behind the passenger seat under the silver cover , where the fuel inlet enters the truck.

Hi All:

Since I've completely de-smogged my rig, and run with nothing more than a bikini top or less year-around I find the fumes less of an issue! :hillbilly:

That said, a buddy swapped in a J**p CJ fuel tank under the rear of his VJ40. It does clear-up a lot of room underneath the front seats for gear! :D But I feel having the fuel tank inside of the frame rail means it is more protected than swinging underneath the rig!

Regards,

Alan

You also need the charcoal can for it to vent into and a connection from that into the air cleaner so it doesn't start to smell like gas too. A '78 is supposed to have a solenoid in the circuit, but a check valve from a brake line would work pretty well. You want the tank to be able to vent out, and the intake to be able to suck fumes out of the can, but you don't want it to be able to suck in air so fumes don't circulate when the engine is off.

what climate do you live in the tanks here get so thin that the fuel seeps through the metal. has the tank ever been out and checked for leaks and is underneath clean and free of mud good luck
