1986 FJ60 2F with 240k

I was driving home this week and just as I was pulling in my driveway and the motor died. I restarted the motor and the motor was knocking (consistant same pattern knock) and the idle now races over 2000 rpms. It won't idle below 2k now and runs rough.

My question - with that many miles (240k) should I:

1. Rebuild the motor (I can do tunes ups but I'm not a true mechanic)
2. Buy a rebuild 2F engine (do swap myself - again, not a true mechanic)
3. Buy a rebuild 2F engine and have someone swap for me (where to go in ABQ?)
4. My son says to replace with a 350 Chevy (he has an old 80's corvette engine)

Before this I was thinking about replacing the trans with a 5 speed H55. I kind of like the stock idea but the FJ60 is in great shape with no rust, it just has a lot of miles. Your thoughts?

Every engine that you come accross is going to need something, I think. I myself wouldn't walk away from toyota as far as engine goes and stuff. I know that a 350 engine opens peoples eyes right away but not in my case. Are you sure that your engine is done? Maybe someone else on the board with much more experience than me can enlight your path. As of me, I would keep it within the family, good luck.

option 4: find a good runner 2F and swap in, with lower miles 150,000 or so. you can find those for $450-700. cheapest solution.

Sounds like carb. needs a good cleaning and maybe a going through, sit in cruiser while someone sprays carb cleaner in carb.,you will have to work the gas while they do so.Spray outside of carb on fittings and springs to throttle.Change fuel filter, check oil. Then see what happens. 2 cents . Mike

Howdy! Sounds more like a carb/controls issue than a bad engine. Could be a smog gear/dizzy problem. John

I'll try the Carb Cleaner tonight but not sure if that would cure the consistant knock pattern.

I would not declare the engine dead yet.

I would pull the valve cover and check the valves and push rods and see what you find.

Then pull all the plugs and do a compression test.

You been to American Toyota in town yet? Cdan is on this forum and gives great discounts to members here and know a lot about cruisers.

Thanks! Looking to dig into the valve cover this weekend. If no luck will try American Toyota.

Cdan is the parts manager at American Toyota. I don't know if they give a discount in the service department. But if you need any parts or advise then stop by and introduce yourself.

Search in this forum about doing a valve adjustment. Check the clearance on all valves.

Jesse: You need to post it up in the High Desert Club section. Lotsa folks over there know the 2f VERY well, and you might find somebody willing to help ya with diagnostics.

If you do need to go w/a shop, my guys out at UnderCar Automotive in Edgewood have been able to keep both my 60's running w/o breaking the bank. PM me if you want name/number...

Carb Cleaner didn't do it. High idle starts up when I first get running (about 2.5 RPMs) and then it slows to about 2k RPMs but the knock just gets louder as it runs.

Next task will be to take off the valve cover (hopefully this weekend).

Howdy! When the engine is warm, but not running, pull off the air cleaner and look down at the throttle plate at the bottom of the carb. It should be closed. The choke plate at the top should be fully open(straight up and down). If the throttle plate is not closed, then something in the linkage is holding it open. Start removing the linkage to find out which part is holding it open. Also, make sure nothing is obstructing the gas pedal in the cab. The knock is probably a seperate problem. John
