So rebuilding the front end, I always wondered why pack so much Molygrease inside the knuckles. So they say 2/3rds full.

After you've loaded the CV, given the insides a good coating, what is the reason to jam so much in there. I can imagine back in the 70s and 80s it may have needed it due to grease performance, but some of this new stuff sticks like s*** to a blanket.

Anyway, thoughts.......

help keep other stuff out, and allow for expansion?

As your CV joint spins, grease will naturally be thrown out to the sides, where it does nothing for the bearing surfaces in the joint. If the joint is continually rotating in grease, then that issue won't happen as there will always be grease for the joint to pick up.

That’s exactly what I was going to say, you beat me to it!

My W460 G-Wagen had enclosed front knuckles like a LandCruiser, but in addition had rubber CV boots over the axle inside. If the CV boot got a hole in it the grease would be flung out and the CV joint would wear out quickly.
