Moly Grease/Knuckle Reseal: Safariwagon-II

So, I'm gonna get down to business with the Axle on my 80 this weekend. Got the kit from CruiserOutfitters last week and am gonna get the rest of everything I need friday.

My question is, where can I buy Moly grease locally? Which part houses should carry it? Is there any different kinds of Moly, or different ratios?

The FAQ write-up on the Knuckle rebuild doesn't really say anything about this.

I got the Valvoline Palladium from local Napa
 
x2: Valvoline Palladium at NAPA, 3% Moly, NAPA stores carry it.

I cleaned out my Napa of Palladium. I bought 4, I think thats hould be enough for one knuckle, right?

Gonna get messy this weekend!
 
Should be enough depending on waste, either way your NAPA store can get more grease in overnight. If you did end up short you could add extra via the inspection ports after it's buttoned up. What are you using for the wheel bearings?
 
Good to know, I can always hit up another Napa which isn't far from me if I need to.

I am running the original wheels bearings, they are in great shape, I am using Kendall Superblu for any other greasing other than the Birfs.

I bought the $120 kit from CruiserOutfitters, so it doesn't come with wheel bearings, figured I don't need them.

Hope this goes somewhat smoothly and straight forward.
 
One relevant question I have:

Should I be using NLGI 2 Bearing Grease or Moly Grease (usually used for brifs) for the needle bearing in the spindle?
 
If you mean the wheel bearings the FSM calls for NLGI 2 wheel bearing grease.
 
I meant the needle bearing inside the spindle.

use the molly grease in the birfield support bearing, the original was a brass bushing the needle bearing is an update.
 
OK, the new style spindle bushing/bearings, got those myself.

Pack that area well with Moly grease before you stuff it in place including the bearing surface of the birfield up against the ABS ring. FWIW there's a 60% Moly grease I'll be using for that area and a few others next time I do a front axle service. Honda makes it, Yamaha also, a 60% Moly lithium based NLGI 2 grease used on Motocycle driveshaft splines; expensive though. There is also a 60% Moly Paste made by Loctite, a finer grade Moly than the grease, it can be painted on areas like that for break in protection.
 
All this talk about "Needle" Bearing" does not apply to '91-'92 FJ80, does it? I didn't see anything like this so far, I have the spindle off and am looking at the Birf.

the needle bearing comes on replacement spindles. It was an upgrade that Toyota did with the 105 series and the 100 series.

If you buy replacement spindles from Toyota you will get the upgraded spindle.
 
Ok, good to know!

So far so good, I have everything apart, axle shaft out, I have the new Trunion bearing races in, Sanded and painted the ball, went to install the new shaft oil seal, and messed the first one up (thankfully I have another)

I really wanted to have this all done today, I may still be able to, if I get the seal in this time.
 
Installed the oil seal this time with out damaging it. PVC pipe and Screwdriver handle works wonders. Everything else is cleaned up, and painted.

Cleaned and repacked the Wheel bearings, installed new seal.

Tomorrow I will put everything back together and check for no leaks!
