I was cleaning the rear carpet the other day after having the '98 LC washed (yes, I was re-doing what they are supposed to do) and noticed that the carpet on the rear passenger side was wet along the back by where the lift gate closes. Not just a couple of errant drops, more like between damp and wet about 6 to 10 inches left to right and 3 to 5 for and aft.

The rubber seals all look good, so I am wondering if water can get in via the passenger side vent on the rear D pillar? What is that vent for anyway?

I'd rather know now, rather than after we get a big rain here in So Cal (as if that is going to happen).

Thanks,

Rob

the big vent is to keep the interior pressure at a normal level, so your ears dont freak out. Maybe the vent flap could be open somehow, i think someone else had a problem like that once. They were from Aussie and kept getting dust in the back. Either that or, could possibly one of your rear windows have been open to vent when they washed it without knowing? It wouldnt need to be fully open to let water in, just enough.

The sunroof drain runs along the passenger side and down by that area I believe. If the drain line cracks or kinks or clogs it would likely leak there. Not to be the one to break bad news. Also, in all leaking conditions, the screws from the roofrack can cause a leak if they are too loose or even worse, too tight.

Hmmm. The side windows were closed, and the seals are good, so how do I check the drain line? Remove the headliner? Ughhh. Is it glued up, or clipped up.

Also, if it was the drain line, wouldn't there be water spots up there?

Thanks,

Rob

draintubes should be behind the trim peices for the Pillars actually. I dont think it runs the whole length in the headliner.

Just take the grab handles off and pop the trim off.

Another suggestion, have a buddy hose the crap out of the truck while you search inside for the sound of water trickling in or can visually see it.

Both ideas are great. I will give my daughters the hose, climb inside, and they can play try to get daddy wet.

Thanks

I had clogged drain tubes on a car sunroof once. It never leaked into the car in the back. Instead it dumped on me! Especially when I stopped or opened the roof.

Odds are better that the leak is in the back or the roof rack somewhere.

Meh...

so not helpful, lol.

Hey i had another idea, are you sure your tailgate was properly latched? I know i used to get water inside even when i had one small 14gauge wire running through the seal. Maybe, by some chance...the lift gate wasnt properly latched and water got in?

Im just thinking that this is due to something being open and not properly sealed, then something clogged or broken...

Well considering that the drive-thru car wash vacs then washes, then maybe they did not latch it. Often the most obvoius thing is just that. So I will do the water test and see if it gets wet again.

Hopefully it is just a random screw up.

Thanks,

Rob

Thanks! I'll check that too.

dude this was my biggest proble with my 06 i was flippin back then my proble was the actual seal around the entire back section; i actually found the problem b/c my daughter spilled our cooler after a trip and then it would not dry. 100 series with sunroofs are known to leak thru the sunroof drain so that is the first thing to check but it drains by the pass back wheel well so the wetness would start there first i took out the back section of the carpet not a big job for a novice like me so i was very proud of myself:bounce2: i dont thnk you can replace that seal unless you are good it took my lexus place 3 times to get it right so i would let them try first good luck

by the way those seals i think are over $100 so to try it fail could be pricey mine was still under warranty so i did not have to pay
