Modifying a soft top..

My 40 has been narrowed by 11" in the rear. The rear opening was left alone however.

I have an old Bestop that I was considering narrowing..

How much of a PITA do you think that would be?

If you have a person who makes canvas boat tops they could easily perform the work.

Well, I am way too cheap for that. All the places around here (Vegas) wanta n arm and a leg to touch a top..

I actually talked to a guy already. He wanted about $450 to do the work..

This could be the excuse you have always been looking for to purchase an industrial sewing machine. I hear the Toyoda loomworks makes a nice model and they have a cheap one at Harbor Freight.

Serious, you could probably sell the cheap harbor freight one on craigslist for not too much of a hit after you were done.
