I have a 2004 LX 470 and the muffler is shot. Rather than put in a OEM I was considering installing a modified muffler for an additional $75 as the shop told me it would increase performance, however would be potentially 20% louder.

Has anyone gone through this experience or know if the 20% is worth it?

Thanks for any advice!!

Do it. Post sound clip

I should have said it is a Performance muffler and not a modified.

I did the exact same thing for the exact same reason. 100% worth it to me, but I've always been one to modify my cars for improved appearance and performance. It's not for everyone. Some like vanilla and there's nothing wrong with that.

Increase performance? Get rid of the toilet paper roll manifolds first.

I apologize for being so "Green". The only reason I indicated Modified or Performance is because the shop indicated the "non" OEM muffler as such.

The also indicated you may gain a mile or 1/2 mile per gallon and a little top end by going with the Magnaflow or similar versus the OEM plug and play.

Main thing is I would like it not to be too loud and still nice to drive down the road without being too Braaapp! Sounds like RND1 likes it. Lastly, the shop charges less to install a Magnaflow versus the OEM???

First, make sure the shop is talking about the muffler and not the resonator. The oem Toyota/Lexus muffler sits in front of the passenger rear wheel and is very large. It also costs about $600 for a new one! The resonator sits at the back of the vehicle and has a tail pipe that you can see below the bumper. The muffler is what usually goes - the outer shell rusts away from the inner shell.

If your shop is telling you that they will install a Magnaflow for an additional $75 over OEM, I'm going to assume that they're quoting you an aftermarket muffler like a Walker. I bought the Magnaflow I linked for $85 and had my local exhaust shop weld it up for $75. $160 out the door.

Some guys on here have installed Magnaflow mufflers AND removed the resonator. I've heard this setup and it would get old quick for me.

Oh and if you're doing this to increase your gas mileage or vehicle performance you'll be disappointed. I didn't see any improvement in either, only sound.

Doug Thorley sounds great

I had a magnaflow muffler before I did the entire exhaust system. It sounded great at low RPM, however on the top end of the RPM range it lost all composure and sounded like a big whooshing sound. It was pretty annoying. Make sure the muffler has the proper flow characteristics. These 4.7's put out a lot of air

What muffler did you go with? I need to quiet down my exhaust. DT headers, 3 inch EMS exhaust, need a quieter muffler.

I found the same went for the Borla system that I had installed previous to the Doug Thorley. Sounded decent puttering around town and under moderate acceleration, but floor it on a straight away and it sounded more like a giant air vent with no exhaust tone.

Here's a comparison video of the two under no load.

Thank you landylover21 and 2000UZJ. That is the information I am looking for. I think they were quoting $75 more to modify the performance/modified muffler to the system as I don't think it would be plug and play as the LC is dual pipe in and single out. I am pretty sure an after market muffler non-performance is $150. Not sure why the Magnaflow is cheaper.

Yes RND1, it is the muffler not the resonator. I appreciate the feedback. All good information.

When my factory exhaust rotted away internally I initially went cheap and got the Walker Quiet-Flow SS and it was junk... Even with my insanely anal undercarriage wash sessions and treatments it still rusted out within three years. I don't know if you're state puts salt on the roads like a McDonald's worker putting it on fries, but the cheaper aluminized steel mufflers don't last worth sh*t in the salt belt states!

It was OEM quiet but the quality was really lacking!

Just something to keep in mind for you and future readers.

Just throw on a flowmaster 40 or 50 series and call it a day, if you want loud go to a 10 series :)

That looks like the one on my truck now, the flowmaster. It is loud and is running 3 inch in and out.

I belong to a very small group of motorcyclist that believe “Quieter is faster”, I can pass by a cop at 20 miles faster than with a loud pipe that he can hear coming five blocks away.

besides bikes have so much freaking power this days what is the point in gaining a little more top end (torque is where is at) bragging right..??

I have nothing to prove..

I got polar bear just like that with a straight pipe instead of a resonator, now I have a used OEM resonators and we are all much happier..

Quiet is a commodity, Hell I spend a ton of money on Dynamat to sound proof the truck, what will be the point of a louder pipe...

So here is a question, would a TRD muffler for a Tundra fit? I would imagine that Toyota engineers would design a muffler that was louder and throaty under acceleration but quite while cruising with no droning.
