Tried the fliped manifold set up on my 3b. Pulled the turbo from a running d-50. checked for the usual signs of wear, end play, oil leaks broke or worn fins checked out good. Tied into the the block where the oil pressure sending unit is, welded a barb into the oil pan for return. Everything went good, minor increase in fuel, night and day difference in power. Couple days later(on my way to get a pyro) the turbo flew apart(1/4" end play in shaft , fins hit housing, not good) Trial and error!!
probably should have rebuilt it
Was woundering if anybody has put significant miles on turbo set up like this.

Also when I had the pan off, my #3 piston cooler is busted off. Anybody know how to get them out. I talked to one jap engine shop he couldn't remember but thought, have to pull crank and drive it out. There is a hex head on the outside of the block. But I couldn't seem to break it loose.

I have the same set up with a custom manifold and have had it running since last X mas. My turbo also appeared to have little end play and what not. Not sure why your would have failed. I hope it was just a freak occurance. Does the turbine shaft still spin freely or is it siezed up?

Shaft still spins, but there is major play like the bushings are totaly pooched!!

There was no warning, I was cruising along then bang. But I nerver had a boost gauge or a pyro. So i figured mabey i was just over spinning it.

The mitsu turbo came on strong in the bottom end but seemed to peter out above 2600-2800rpm

Currently hunting for a 13b-t manifold.

I dont know much about turbos but I heard that some are quite loose on the shaft. At high RPM they balance just right. Of course if the play wasnt there before ,ignore;)
