I am thinking about buying another 40 for parts or using mine as the donor and registering the new "older one" 40. On the 40 I am looking at the vin # on the plate at the door jam and it does not match the stamped frame number. What does this mean? Is this suspect? Should I care?

The big issue is that the VIN on the title matches the VIN on the frame. Body tags are convenient, but the law doesn't place much value on them - title should follow the frame.

Well after a phone call the guy say the title matches the vin on the door plate not the frame. What does it mean? Body from one cruiser mounted to a different chassis?

Is there any way to do a dmv check to see if the frame vin is being used?

That is generally what it means.

In California, it may be as simple as having a Highway patrol person inspect the vehicle and the VIN's. They can assign a new tag to it and that is it.

I don't know about NV.

Or it means that someone attached a vin plate for a rig they had scrapped and kept the title for... on to a rig they did not legally own...

Seen it more than once... :(
