Been a while since i updated the thread. Over the weekend i took Lucille on her first over the road long distance test. A 100 mile round trip to Colorado Bend State park in Bend Texas. My buddy and his wife, along with their pups, took his vintage Cherokee Chief and CJ-5 out to the park. We camped, fished, cooked some red meat, made s'mores and ice cream around the fire. We did some mild wheeling. I actually put Lucille in low range and cruised around the park roads/trails. Fun was had by all.
I did have some issues though. My starter is on its way out. It sparks when i turn the key to start. I few ideal placed blows with a blunt object got it to turn over. Other than that Lucille ran and drove great. Top speed was 62 mph on the roads to the park. Cant wait to continue using the rig on future outings.
Pics.
The CJ was flat-towed behind the Chief.
I thought there were only hiking and biking trails in that park? I've been there a couple times but only drove the main gravel road.
Old shocks vs new. Old were rusted through and beyond blown out. I had my reservations that i could even unbolt the original shocks, but after numerous Kroil oil soakings, the nuts came off with ease.
Used the quick method to remove everything from the knuckles out. Much easier than messing with all the messy goop inside. Any value in these? Otherwise i may just chunk them. I still need to pull the inners off the factory coarse splined birfs.
New tie-rod ends installed. Boy did that suck. The originals were definitely stuck in there. I used my vise and a big pipe wrench to spin them out. I ordered the wrong left hand thread rod end for the arm coming from the steering box, so I have to wait a day for the new one to come in from Amazon.
New shocks installed. Axle balls are in great shape.
Anyone know the inner axle seal part number for these axles? Will the mini truck seals fit? Im going to start putting it all back together in the next few days.
Looks like a big job!! You've got the workshop to do it--when I was there picking up the doors from you I very much was jealous of your setup.
Being that I have a '74 as well, let me know what OEM parts you are taking off and not reusing as I am interested in buying them to keep just in case.
Thanks. I love the 3rz engines. I have one in my 79 hilux and have had a few others in the past. They rip. Adding a turbo to one is all new to me though, but i cant see how it wont make super cool noises.Looking forward to hearing how you like this drivetrain setup. Love to see different style builds.
