I stripped the stud when removing the nut on the manifold to exhaust pipe.
How do I remove it?

It looks like "H" in the pic
http://www.bikernet.com/news/images/PhotoID4100.jpg

Is there a tool to remove and install it?
I assume that its metric.

Also:
Can I install the exhaust pipe to the manifold with only one nut? There is only two studs on the manifold.

I also had some luck with a socket just a little bigger than the torx ... hammer it on if you have to (it's trash anyway). You'll prolly want the sockets for the new one anyway though (two bolts work as well ... just more time consuming).

Good Luck!

What I ment was, can I install the exhaust pipe to the manifold with just one stud?
Will there be a problem with only having one stud hold the pipe to the manifold?

Also to get that nut out if you can't is to file a nich in it for a flat head screwdriver and try and unscrew it out if you don't want to buy another socket.

Soak the stud in PB blaster or your favorite penetrating oil, wait a day, and soak it again. Repeat. Then use either the Sears stripped bolt head socket (SnapOn, etc. make the same but at many times the price) which looks like a socket that has twisted fluting inside, or maybe use an easy-out. The first is a far better option IMO.

Sears item #00952162000 Mfr. model #52162 is a kit of lots of these, but you probably only need one.

The right tool is cheap compared to breaking something really expensive !

Best of luck

I PB Blasted the stud. Went to Sears and bought the stud (me) removal tool.

(someday someone will show me how to make a smaller link)
I got the Lesle Torx Socket Set.

I used the Craftsman stud remover and the came right out.

I got some high temp copper AntiSieze. It goes to 2000 deg.
Does the manifold get over 2000 deg?

I think I found the reason the stud striped. I reused the locking nut. I guess you shouldn't reuse it.

The only thing that went rigth was the SS bolts that I used to bolt up the cats to the exhaust pipes. They came apart with ease
I wish every nut and bolt was SS.

Use anti-seize compound on everything when your re-assembling. I just removed a complete exhaust system that I put on 6 years ago with hand tools and no breakage because of using anti-seize. Sometime called Never-Seize and is available almost everywhere.

Kurt,

For a '97 the FSM says front exhaust pipe x exhaust manifold is 46 ft-lbs.

I also second the Craftsman Bolt-Outs. They've saved my sorry ass more than once.

Kurt,

This is your lucky day.

To make a link you do the following:

enter the special tag that tells the forum software that you are embedding a link. [ url= (no spaces)
Paste the link followed by a closing bracket.
[ url=http://www.somelink.com ] (again, no spaces)
Then type the wording you want followed by a closing tag.
[ url=http://www.somelink.com ] Kurt's learning something new today [ /url ] (no spaces)

That's all there is to it. You can "View Source" to see the Sears stud remover link above.

(Seems like I helped you post your first picture of a turtle about 4 years ago. :D )

I've used them on nuts, studs, screws, whatever. So long as you can push the socket over it, it will bite in and let you remove it.

sor board

-B- I used the hyperlink button (earth with a chain link) Is this what you ment? OR iis there more than one way to bust a birfield?
