Good Morning! I have the 28 gallon Man-A-Fre tank installed in a 73 FJ40 Located under the fronts seats. I am running a Throttle Body/350.
The three lines that come off the back of the tank go to the bottom of the "evaporative emmision control device". The "device" has a line coming off the top. It had a hard fuel that ran throught the floor panel up to the engine compartment. (which was not capped or attached to anything) I removed that line and capped that outlet because the line had worn and was leaking.. Lately while driving the tank sounds as though it is expanding and contracting. Big loud noise/bangs. And I have noticed that when the fuel cap is removed it wants to take orbit. I seems like it needs to be vented. I was thinking of putting a axle breather on the line and see if that works. Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Put some pics of install of tank on this thread. Got some PM's from people wanting to see install.

I am curious about this as well. I have a stock tank with a TPI set up. The PO put a little threaded valve stem cap on the tube I figured their was a schrader valve under there. I took a look and it was just placed on there. My cab was filling up with fumes while driving. I put a little one way check valve in it to only let air in. I am sure if I drive it too long it will rupture the diaphragm, but no noises from expanding yet. I checked pressure in the tank when I got to work today and she gave me a little puff to the face when I took the gas cap off.

If the check valve fails on the way home I will let you know. You can get them at autozone, etc.

Well the valve held. But my tank deformed a little and I could hear it pop. I pulled the valve and fumes filled the cabin. Yeah! Somethings got to be done, but I dont know what. I am thinking of just venting it to the outside until I can figure something else out or until someone here can help.

Thanks for the reply. Did some investigative research, it does need a vent. We came up with running rubber fuel line up into engine compartment with a breather filter. Same route as the stock fuel line. Put 1 maybe 2 loops in the line in case fuel does go thru the cannister. I also had fumes in the cab. Hopefully this will solve the tank and fumes issue. Will let you know.

if i understand you guys correctly.. the hose coming off the separator - the thing with the three lines going to it - should be a rubber hose connected to a fuel filter with a rubber hose connected to the steel line that you mentioned that goes through the floor and up to the engine bay on the PS side. There it should be attached to a rubber hose which goes to the charcoal canister - the charcoal canister has another rubber vacuum line coming out of it that goes to a bunch of emissions stuff that eventually leads into the intake manifold where the fumes get burnt off.. something like that anyways

if you wanted to you could just leave that hose unplugged in the engine bay or put it into a canister and leave that open.. that how it is on mine right now. either way don't plug it because the tank needs to vent as you already have discovered - i think it can be dangerous if you plug it

I would be very worried about that...because you are venting fumes (the explosive state of gasoline) into a hot, sparking engine compartment.

edit: I think if you hit the charcoal canister first you might be okay

That makes sense. The only thing I can add to that is that the original fuel line had been there for about 6 years and was not hooked to anything, no cannister, etc. Those 40 engine compartments aren't that air tight. Putting a breather filter on it should do the trick.

had the exact same problem on my 75 40,i got rid of the check valve ,then diconnected the rubber line were it meets the hard line directly under the passenger seat.got rid of the tank building air and also got rid of the fuel fumes.has worked so far don't know wether it's right or not..somebody on here will probably correct me!!!happy trails,,

Besides the venting and fumes, are you happy with the 28 gallon tank? I have a FJ45 and I've been strongly considering the underseat tank.

How hard/easy was it to install? Do you have pictures of the install? How much modification to the seat brackets? Any regrets?

You can PM if this borders on a hijack.

Very happy with it. It came with everything you need except fuel sender. But it takes awhile, so order it now.
The pro's: not having to look for a gas station every 160 miles.
The con: I dont think there are enough baffles in the tank. The sender is all over the place, i.e., the gauge is all over the place. But I have gotten used to it. It reads fine while parked, but once you start driving, the guage starts its happy dance.
Before you ask, I have auto meter guages and it is the correct sender for the gauges. I spent hrs. (OK, maybe 1) taking the sender in and out making sure it was not hitting anything and it was centered.

Hope this helped. Hopefully somebody might have an answer for the bouncing gauge.

you should be able to just uncap that metal line and put a fuel line rubber hose on it to a breather filter, like a valve cover breather. The proper way is to have it vent back to your engine for consumption of those fumes via a charcoal canister. This has been discussed, do some searches for "venting, breather, fuel seperator, etc"

So is it pretty noisy inside, with the sloshing fuel? Probably will be even more noise in the small cab of my 45.

Does the OEM sender work with this unit?

Any other modifications required? Floor or seat brackets.

Does having this tank eliminate the possibility of having a Tuffy center consule?

First off, got the hose running right where the stock fuel line was. A couple of clamps, and it fit nicely/cleanly right up just past the heater motor. No rubbing. sharp edges. Put the breather on, good to go. I know it is supposed to run back to the motor, but oh well.

Sloshing, not to bad. But its a small price to pay for extra fuel.
Dont know ifthe OEM unit would work. Dont see why not. But this tank is deeper.

I have stock front seats. The brackets that are attached to seat fit with the brackets that they send you. Its all very easy.

I also put in a Tuffy Box. Works great. I even raised the height of the seats cause I always felt like was sitting in a hole.
If I get a chance I will take a few pics. Just signed up for "The Star", so should have access soon.

again, if you want it any time soon, order now. I waited 3 extra months and the price went up $200.00

what are the measurements on the tank on the drivers side? (front to back, and floor to top)

Front to back is 20 1/2 inches. Top to bottom on the tank is 7 1/4. Its sits pretty much flush with the floor. Thinkin about getting one? Its nice, and I like the fact the weight is in the middle of the vehicle.

It sure would help with travel distance. I wonder if a discount could be had if a couple of us went in on a few.
