Does anybody run a mallory mechanical advance distributor in their f engine? They are much cheaper than the non usa dizzy and don't require the ported vacuum mod. I was wondering how they perform and if having no vacuum advance would be a good idea considering my stock dizzy doesn't have it anyway.

I have one in mine, but it was in the truck when I bought it so I don't have anything to compare it too. I put a pertronix in it last year, but before that I was always messing with the points. Napa doesn't carry the right cap and rotor for them, but I order mustang stuff way too often with summit, and they stock them.

Who sells pertronix? I'm sick of points also..

I have a dual point Mallory distributor assy. $50.00 plus the ride and it's yours. It came out of my 76 FJ40.

i'm interested. tell me more. is this a vac advance unit?

I use one. The mechanical advance units can be converted to magnetic pickups
by Mallory. You mail it to them and they retro-fit. No problems since I did this
and ditched the *&^%$*&#@ points. :grinpimp:

how much did it cost to do this?

I think it was $90. They only do it for mechanical advance single
points units. I had screwed with points for so long I even bought
a spare sending unit just in case of failure. That was several years ago
and I haven't even been in the distributor since. I did pop the
cap for inspection once for "old times sake". Looked
like new. I still have a spare set of the electronics in my tool
box. It never hurts to have spares and old habits die hard. ;)
Tip: seat the dizzy ALL the way down. They can "work" not
fully seated and poorly drive the oil pump.
Don't ask how I know this fact. ;)
