That is a clean rig. Little far for me. I be looking at another one for out herd though. Thinking H42 + crawl box + split case = 4 seated Awesomeness!!

Give up that dream. Marlin ain't doing that box anymore, with no plans in the future. Yeah. I found that out after I bought GoldDigger.

WHAT THA FUDGE!?!? Well that sucks a fat one.... well that sucks. Like never ever again? Or just until enough folks ask about one?

Exactly how many folks do think are asking for them? LOL. Maybe 4 in the next half decade? And that may very well be people who don't even own a 3FE yet, much less one behind a H42/H55.

Let's see if we can't do a group buy deal on that 80-series reduction gear. I'm about ready to get me one... just need the motivation.

@Land Speeder so the only split case option is to go with the AA gears, that is unless you can round up 20 or 30 folks who all want a toybox to try and entice MC into running a batch? That sucks. Was working thru getting into the low and slow crowd in a 80.

If we need to move to chat, we can, but if I'm doing my math right a stock split case/H42 setup is gonna almost be the same as an auto in an 80 with a marlin gear.

Auto w/529 and marlin gear = 2.95 x 3.116 x 5.29 = 48.6:1

H42/ split-case w/529 = 3.55 x 2.29 x 5.29 = 43:1

H42/ split case with AA gears and 529 = 3.55 x 4 x 5.29 = 75:1

Add a 2.28 toybox to the last one and you get down to 171:1, just toybox with no low gear in case gets you around 98:1

So being a noob to the gearing game I have no idea what is a good target to aim at. Looks like with a w56/dual cases (4.7 rear) and 5.29 gears those mini guys can get down to 223:1, so am is my list for that 171:1 in an 80 now a pipe dream or should I hold out?

Don't get me wrong, the marlin gear is still nearly double low range to the stock 80. Just trying to work thru it in my noggin and figure out a direction to take this rig that I haven't even looked at, let alone bought yet.

meh. There's not really a trail that I WANTED to take an 80 up that I HAVEN'T been able to. So the 25% low reduction would be OK for me.

@jynx find the toybox first of you want to do it, they are rare as hens teeth but can be found. You are correct about the h42 being the same as sure auto + marlin reducer and the h55 lowers the ratio even more. My setup is a 4.7 to 1 box behind the h42 and stock gears everywhere else 157.67 to 1 final drive. I never use both lows engaged though and when I use the toybox I almost always have to start in 2 or 3

@BamaPaul so for the stuff we have around here in the south you generally never see a need for double low? Having wheeled the way you have, would you say auto with a marlin gear or H42 with a AA 4:1 gearset? the marlin gear is $800 plus if your in there you may as well weld up the center diff and throw on a set of hubs, so all in your likely gonna be $1500, maybe less into the swap. The H42 and split case with all the stuff to do the swap will run around $1000, maybe knocking on $2000 with a trans rebuild, new clutch, hubs, driveshaft work, etc.

Those two options get you about even on gearing, another $1500 and your at about what you say you generally run at, right? And eliminate the need for the toybox which is only ALMOST impossible to source.

For down here the need to go slow is not always there. I like having the option to go slower if I need to. I did the swap because I wanted a manual and wanted the neuance of having something almost nobody has along with the low range. I think the cost was around $1500 all in with $800 of that being the used toybox and $200 into new bearings and seals for the transfer case and h42.
The new marlin great set would be a great option but if you go bigger on tires you are going to need to regear the diffs as well as the tcase making it a bigger cost than the toybox since I was able to stay with factory diff gears.

So I am actively looking for a Toybox. With that said, do any of you guys know anything about the 203 adapters for the H42/ split case combo? I am sure I could come up with a 203 range box pretty easy. Anybody got any info on that adapter set?

One of the Cotton land guys has a sm420 to a 3spd tcase setup for sale. Am I going backwards to consider this? Trying to get more infos. May not a good option for the 3FE. Still learning so forgive the ignorant questions.

Ok, well that takes care of that. What are your thoughts on the sm420. That deep 7:1 first gear with a regular split case and a set of 5.29:1 in the axle would get you 7 x 2.29 x 5.29 = 84.8:1 don't know much about the 420 and I hate to swap it into an 80, but gears is gears.

Am I reading way to far into this? I mean, I think I'd like to put a manual on an 80 cause it'd be cool, and if I could end up with the low range box, that'd be a bonus.

Maybe I will just go ahead and put together a h42 swap and then hope I can stumble into a toybox. If not and I want more I can drop some $$ on the AA gears down the line.

Don't even consider the 420, a friend had a 40 with one and it was a nightmare to shift. It was basically a two speed on the street.

H55 has a low first gear also. I think I saw someone in the 80 forum, whoever was making the adapter plate for jonesys, was making an h55 to 80 full time case adapter.

You could also consider an nv4500 + 203 + split case. I think all of those adapters exist also.

10-4 on the 420.

Will have to check into the 4500 setup. Having the 5spd would be nice, especially if I was gonna run the roads at all.

@jynx you post as much as anyone else over here, so start a thread! word on the nets is you found a rig to do all this to! let us see! post it in this thread!
