I do not know the history of this 2F, may have been freshly rebuilt. The scratches in the surface can barely be felt with a fingernail.
Normal?
What else should I check without tearing it apart? I feel that is what I will end up doing anyway.
Thanks.

Whats the crank look like?
I have only pulled this one cap. It looks fine right there.
The pan had water in it, so some of the crank surface has light surface rust on it. I think I am gonna go ahead and tear the engine apart this weekend, just for piece of mind. I can only hope to get out of this with just a gasket set.

If you are tearing it down, I would at least put bearings in it.

I am going to look at the rest, but this being the " last" cruiser, it would be best to put a new set in. Can I tell if the crank has been turned by the #s on the bearings?

If you have numbers from the bearings it may be possible to look them up and they might indicate something like ## over standard.

@Poser @byron bean

So the teardown continues.
First the lifters, obviously had water sitting on them, I'm sure I will be replacing them.

The pushrods had surface rust on a couple, and the top two inches of all but #1 cyl showed heat discoloration. Forgot to take a pic.

The oil pump and top of head look brand new!

The valves look new to me, combustion chamber shows rust on #4.

The first four pistons are marked 46, but 5 and 6 are marked 50. Does this mean they are oversize?

I cleaned off two to take pics. You can see cross hatching, and there is no lip at the top. I checked it with my fingernail.
I hope it will all check out at the machine shop, and just need a good cleaning , balancing, and reassembly. I will find the older flywheel to balance it with.

Get that head cleaned out. There are a lot of water passages that are plugged.

Also by the #5 spark plug hole, there is a soft plug that looks like someone has smeared epoxy over it and it is leaking. Have the machine shop remove that garbage, drill and tap the hole for a threaded plug and be done with the oil leak or possibility of it later.

Will do. I am taking the head and block to the machine shop for cleaning and check up.

Those are stock factory pistons. The casting #s on top are just that: mold number. They mean nothing.
If the pistons were OS, the OS would be stamped on the machined lip on the crown. Stock size pistons will only have the size class (single digit) stamped on the top.

@FJ40Jim , thanks for the reply.
I am going to tear it down and have the rotating assembly balanced, and put it back together with new bearings. The walls look great, I will have the head vatted also.
I would like to send u ou the carb and dist if you are taking on new work.
Thanks, Frank

The head has machine marks on it, any way to know how much has been taken off previously?
@FJ40Jim , I will get those other #s from block and head. I really want to know which engine it is.
