Can anyone direct me to a trust worthy machine shop in town, preferably one that could get my head back in 3-5 days? This is for my 95 FZJ80. Thanks

I don't know of any good shops in Tucson and don't know of anyone that has had that type of work done locally on an 80, so you maybe covering new ground?

Please, no personal attacks on this forum.

sonoranfun, please find somewhere else to post.

I called Bill Lee of Bill's Toy Shop two weeks ago to talk to him about rebuilding my engine. Bill is leaving Tucson and moving to Silver City, New Mexico, so he's not taking on any new business. This is a shame since AFAIK he was the most knowlegeable Land Cruiser Mechanic in town.

I asked him to recommend a machine shop and he gave me two recommendations, one is Don at Machineworks (520) 624-5735, near the WildCat house on Stone. I dropped my cylinder head and manifolds off there on Tuesday. Don has been working closely with Bill Lee for many years and said he had done many 2F cylinder heads and manifolds. He is extremely busy (a good sign) and said it would be at least two weeks to do my parts. If it looks to be a good job at a fair price I'll probably take my block to him as well.

I don't have the other recommendation handy, it's in my notes at work, but I'll post it in a follow up post later.

I doubt he was the one who deleted it. I could be wrong.

Bill Lee's second recomendation for a machine shop in Tucson was Nippon Motor Service at 520-881-8976, talk to JoAnne.

It appears that all the numbers for Tucson machine shops are backed up for roughly two weeks. They all say that a couple of machine shops closed up so they are picking up the slack. Unless anyone can direct me to another shop it looks like I will have to drive to Glendale (2+hrs I think) to have Medtro’s recommendation do the work. Anyone else? Plus thanks for all the numbers so far. I think my HOA knows what I’m doing in my garage?

Well if you have to come all the way north, B&B machine in Mesa is a little closer than Glendale. They have always done good work for me.

Kyle, I don't personally know any machine shops but if you call my mechanic buddies at Calypso 326-5358, I bet they know somebody. Sorry I can't be more help.
i haven't been on line much this week or I would have said something earlier.

Hey Cliff I tried calling B&B and couldn't find a phone number. So it looks like Glendale it is.

The shop that did my 4runner 3.slow heads is G & T 480-792-6678. They are just off of Arizona Ave in South Chandler and do mostly Japanese stuff.

B&B does some quality work. They are busy most of the time though wich kinda sucks but it's also a good sign...sometimes.

Well thanks for all the numbers guys but I went ahead with the one in Glendale since they have done so many of the 80's. I liked the shop and that they could do everything in house (Clean, organized and experienced). My HG failure was due to erosion pretty much and went outside of the gasket. The head appeared pretty warped according to my ruler and flat surface. So bottom line it has to be welded, valve job, set the valves without shims pressure tested, shaved, and heat treated (etc.) which comes to a near total of 600 bones or more. Sounds like a lot to some and me but a year warranty and a good quality work is worth every penny. If the head gets me another 100,000 miles it’s worth it in my book. I compared it to buying a used head and having it worked over and it still came out cheaper. They guaranteed it would be better than factory. Man that was a long drive to Glendale. Anyone coming to Tucson from Glendale on Tuesday? :0 Peace and Thanks again for all the info.
Note: I called every machine shop listed and they were all swamped.

Let me know your impressions of the shop when you're done with the job. I'm always on the lookout for a good machine shop.

Glad to see that this thread got up and running for you... I'm honestly really sorry you had the HG issue, it isn't common so it just stinks you had to deal with it.. On the flip side, when do you need the head brought back down? I have to run up there to pick up a pallet of apple seeds I bought so I can get it for you while I'm up there... That is if the trash I talk on the ride home doesn't warp it again ;)
