The more I think about it, you might be better off with the LX. I say this because I remember talking my friend into a 2008 LX570 when it was new and she sold it last year to buy another new LX. If you’re driving 20k a year, the LX will most likely be less trouble and cheaper to maintain. Good luck whatever you decide.

We have owned the GLS450, GLS550, LX470, and LX570, along with other vehicles over the years. If you are towing anything over 4500 lbs total weight (including trailer) I would go straight to the LX570, it makes a much better towing vehicle than the GLS once the weight starts creeping up past 5k. If you are not going to tow anything that heavy and you are not really an offroad enthusiast then the GLS rides a LOT nicer. Airmatic over AHC any day of the week for comfort. GLS has a better power band, and gets better MPG. Fit and finish is nice in both vehicles. Both have good seating. The GLS has better sound insulation in my opinion. And although people always have different experiences with various dealerships, i have always had much better experience with the two mercedes dealerships here for service versus the Lexus dealerships.

By serious use do you mean daily driving on pavement or off-roading? This will be strictly an on road family/trailer hauler. My expectation is whatever I get, I will keep for 8 to 10 years. Thats another reason I was leaning towards the LX570, I love my current 2001 LX470, and Mercedes reliability... leaves something to be desired from what I've read.
Sorry, by serious use I meant you will rely on this vehicle to not leave you stranded. If only it were more reliable I would have strongly considered a CPO GL63 a few years back. I would have forgiven the interior for 550 hp and 7 seats.

Another thing to consider is the inconvenience of having to take a vehicle to the dealer for unscheduled maintenance. Yeah it's covered but how much time was wasted? Where were you going when the trip was interrupted? My S class started misfiring on the entrance to 495 toward the Lincoln Tunnel (NYC) on the way to a meeting. I just parked it in a garage and prayed it wouldn't have to be towed out of there. Thankfully it didn't but it wasn't fun limping to Mercedes Manhattan, having to catch a train home as they didn't have loaners, and being without a car for a few days. Yeah it was covered under warranty but you think my wife cared when she had to pick me up from the train station?

I've had some good experiences with BMWs but that's been the exception definitely not the rule.

I had almost 40k miles on my 2015 LC with no issues. I have a Landcruiser on order should be here sometime in March.

I have owned 6 Mercs, mostly AMG 63 variety and they have even outstanding and reliable since 2014. However, I would get an extended warranty if you’re keeping it past 100k miles. I have driven both the LX570 and GLS580. Honestly, the GLS beats it by a mile in terms of tech and comfort. The massaging seats alone are worth price of admission. Even the GLS450 is plenty powerful for everyday driving. If your lugging kids around and want luxury, go with the GLS. Better cargo capacity as well and usable cup holders for all.
Around six Mercedes almost all when I was still working and making a lot of money because you will need a lot of money to maintain them both my AMG,s had the upgraded brakes system and in 5000 miles I needed a $2000+ brake job. I got rid of all of them before they were out of warranty but none of them broke down but these vehicles are extremely expensive to maintain even if you found an independent shop to work on them.

I've owned two Mercedes. I am half German and grew up in the land of Mercedes. I love Mercedes.

I also never want to own another Mercedes. I trust Land Cruisers and LX's to get me where I need to go and get me back safely. I don't have that same trust in a Mercedes.

With that being said, pretty much every Mercedes I've driven drives better than a Land Cruiser or LX.

I didn’t do ceramic breaks on mine. They are a pain in the rear. Super mushy, can squeal unless you stomp on them often. I always had prepaid maintenance. I prefer not having to think about where to take them. Drive and enjoy 😎

Not a stupid question at all. Honestly have had several trucks, not really sure if I need another one. Not towing a fifth wheel trailer, more like a 21 footer. Plus I'm looking for a more comfortable ride than a truck is going to offer. My wife was a huge fan of the 2020 LX570 AHC. My 2001 AHC, not so much though.
I don’t know...those Dodge Ram 1500 sure ride nice these days with coil springs....

I won't get another Ram. My 2011 Hemi had a blown head gasket at 60k. My 2016 ecodiesel had a blown power steering (which is completely enclosed, the only way to repair is replace the whole unit for like 5k) at 44k and wasn't covered under the powertrain warranty. This along with the 1 year and counting issue with the ecodiesel class action settlement, has led me to not buy a Ram again.

Rumors say the next gen tundra in 2022 may have coil springs. If it gets 22+ on the highway it may be a contender
