All this over a part (parts) that should be removed and discarded.

Normally I would agree but on the 80, I actually found them to be genuinely useful. If I didn't venture too far off the tarmac, I would have left them on.

My removed boards are color matched and have "LEXUS" imprinted on them.

Norcal- I don't think that's right. My '97 LX did not come with the running boards or roofrack painted. Mine do say "LEXUS" on them. Many I looked at while shopping for one did not, either. Perhaps it depends on the dealer?

It wasn't an observation that I posted...I do recall reading somewhere that the 97s were color matched (along with the bumpers).

Can't seem to locate the info on the interweb though...but to be honest, I didn't do the most intensive search.
