Hi there,

I just sold my 3rd gen 4runner and now I'm with the 80 series world. More specific LX450.
So I have a 1FZ-FE. Seems to be a pretty well performed engine. For my personal preference it's pretty good powered despite the fact people said its underpowered.

but I have a couple questions:

- The Engine oil cap smell a bit gasoline? (is it normal?)
- What is the BIG maintenance to do for a 160K 1FZ that you don' have access to what the previous owner did?
- What is the perfect hot idle on the 1FZ?

Thank you

A.

Welcome :flipoff2:. Oil cap should not smell like gas. You should check for fuel leaks. Check your front knuckles. If there is lot of grease buildup, you may want to do a complete knuckle build (seals, bearings etc). If there is no grease, you should check to see how much grease is still in each knuckle. There is a filler/check port on top of the knuckle with a square head. Grease all joints, and check Pesky Heater Hose (PHH). Lots of info here. Also check newbies guide on Sleeoffroad as well as FAQ here.

Engine idle should be around 650, if not mistaken. Expect to burn a little oil under normal conditions. Also, expect a little more oil loss from valve cover gasket, oil pump seal and crank shaft seal in front....if those items haven't already been replaced by PO.

R & R (remove and replace) Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, accessory drive belts (AKA fan belts), thermostat, radiator cap fuel filter, air filter, PCV valve and grommet. Flush cooling system, check condition of hoses - replace if necessary. Flush power steering system and flush brake fluid. Change oil and filter, change fluid in axles, transfer case and transmisson (do the tranny a couple of time depending on the condition of what drains out of the pan). Toyota OEM parts are recommended.

After all that, check for leaks, etc and repair as required. Otherwise, enjoy.

Welcome
The longer I have my Lx 80, I'm so impressed by what a solid truck it is. Toyota has always under powered for durability, dependability & longevity.

Where should I start for the fuel leak that make the Oil cap smell gas?
