If we’re talking trails, give me a 4th Gen 4R V8 for the money.

We had a GX for a while. They’re great overall. The best midsize daily 4x4 on the market for longterm.

Add a split tailgate with sliding window and nori green…then we’re talking

That's the thing though. A GX can be had for 4th Gen v8 money, and it's easily a better car. That's possibly changed in the last several years and social media has caught onto the GX being an uber 4R. More space, better drivetrain. I had a 4th gen v8, and while it was awesome, it also paled in comparison to my parents same year GX that had superior space and refinement. The 4R cab is tiny, about as small as a mid-size sedan. I couldn't deal with the V6 variants with the tepid power.

How similar are the Prado gx and 4Runner? As far as drivetrain and frame goes ?

They are very very similar. Probably minor details changes if any in the frame. Drivetrain on the GX is superior by far, except for the now rare 4th gen v8. Suspension is all shared. And as it was designed for the lighter sister variants, when used on the GX with aggressive 33s into 34s with heavy builds or aggressive use, needs bolstering of the steering components, spindle, etc.
