This 80 series project started at the end of last year, and we suddenly decided to change the original color for the new light green or gray Lunar Rock from Toyota. I'm helping my cousin with this project, he doesn't know anything about cruisers but I decided to document what we have done so far since he bought it last year. A picture from when he first bought it.

Original paint, not in a great shape, this a fully loaded model. Bought it originally in Oregon 1996, $49k dealer price. Tan interior, Leather seats, sunroof, alarm, CD player multi disk, sunroof and doors wind deflector, running boards, rear spoiler, hitch point. The engine has been used, he bought it with 310k miles on October 22 to someone in Kentucky.

It was running but it needed some love. I first saw lots of oil accumulation over the years probably due to a gasket failure or valve cover seal. Also noticed that the front knuckles needed to be rebuilt. refresh suspension including new bushing all around.

We disassembled the cylinder head from the block, took it to a machine shop, and resurfaced. Installed a new head gasket, I also ordered all the parts needed from Cruiser Outfitters including all the under carrier parts. At this point we weren't sure about the suspension size, so we waited a little longer to order.

Rebuilt front axle and rear axle, replaced with brand new Koyo bearings

The engine was running smooth for a few days but was lacking power, until it started to lose power completely. We discovered that the catalytic converters were shot, so we decided to install a brand new exhaust with brand new catalytic converters, that was really pricey. After that, we noticed the change immediately, faster response and more power. It was struggling before that.

We kept working on the engine and axles. On the suspension size, he decided that he didn't want it to be too high so we decided to go with
Old Man Emu Suspension Light/Medium Load

1 - OME 2851 Front Coil Springs
2 - 60018 Front Nitrocharger Sport Shocks
1 - 2860 Rear Coil Springs
2 - 60020 Rear Nitrocharger Sport Shocks
1 - CA77B Caster Correction Kit
1 - OME SD24 Steering Damper

This the final result after suspension also new tires 33" all terrain. Actually it looks like stock but it is higher than stock.

We finished a few missing stuff like a new alarm setup, we got the original at the dealer and reinstalled the system, It only needed the remote. We got new LED light bulbs for the headlights and license plate lights, all interior as well. He hired a detail company for a fully clean on the interior and exterior. And then it was sent to paint.

Looking forward to seeing an 80 in Lunar Rock. Subbed.

The truck was fully painted in and out, painted front rear bumper, running boards and splash guards for now. All that will be removed in the future with armor. The wheel wells were also painted.

The engine bay was sprayed black to hide the red color. I should be getting more pictures soon.

The center pillar got painted by mistake, need to be wrapped in black. The color changes a little bit with light.

The hitch and splash guards look hideous painted. But I'm guessing it will be removed later on.

Those pictures were taken just coming out of the paint shop. These are all the pictures that I got so far, I will be posting more about it.

Wow, the paint shop also painted over the rubber gaskets around the fender flares. Why did they paint over the mud flaps and the trailer hitch? I was excited to see this, but it's just one big blob of lunar rock paint. Not having discernable lines makes the cruiser look funny. I'm surprised they didn't paint the windows and lights too. Looking forward to you breaking up the expanse of lunar rock with armor.

Surprised they didn't paint the glass too, considering they painted the rubber mud flaps, bumpers, hitch, frame, and all the running boards.

Not my cup of tea, but if it looks good to him, that's what's important.

My friend @Underwood helped me to install all the new OME bushings. Also painted all arms while replacing the bushings.

While doing that work he recommended undercoating the fender wells and frame. It was a hard job, he sanded everything down and removed all dirt and grease from under carrier, which took him several days.

Haha, looks like when I got my LX450 re-painted. The shop went a little overboard. :hillbilly: They also painted over my fender flare gaskets.

Cool color, looks funky in the night shots, but great in the overcast shots. Paint the trailer hitch and b-pillar back to black and replace the mudflaps and I think it'll be good to go. Maybe even the factory grey on the bumpers would look good. Kudos on the maintenance and upgrades

This looks good! Good work, I know what mine looks like under there, not an easy job. Your friend put in some sweat and probably some blood during that task.

Also changed all the leather interior seats including the third row.

We added a brand new OEM floor carpet all the front section and under the back seats, we kept the trunk carpet.

New weather strip in all windows and new tail gate rubber.

Prinsu rack is coming and we will change the rear bumper in the next few months.

I thought I recognized the work from @Underwood (jakeofallterrains). Also just realized you're in Knoxville too. If I ever get mine decently complete I'd like to have him do the same to mine. I'll be keeping any eye out for a lunar rock 80 around here now! You have someone local around here paint it?

Yes, it was someone local. My uncle knew a guy from a dealership that used that guy for paint jobs. The painter recently moved from Honduras and he did a good job for what was paid for it, but took over a month to paint it because was too busy.
The paint need some detailing, one buff to looks shiner. He didn't remove the fender flare, we would like to remove them and replace the rubber around them, no sure if we will do it soon.

Got to be honest here, I'm kinda liking the stripe on the second piller, it ties in the lines fairly well.
