Do you think that people are born lucky? There is probability and there is just good fortune. We've seen people win the lottery twice and beating probability. What do you think? What's your experience with luck?

I think there are people that have very good luck... My best friend could accidentially buy s*** in a paper bag and have someone randomly offer him more than he paid for it. I don't think he's ever had a losing night at the casinos when I'm with him... it's sickening really.

IMHO luck is mostly a matter of planning and attention to details.

For the most part you make your own luck, good or bad.

Example, a guy has a blow out on the highway. Bad luck? or did he just neglect his tires?

Another guy wins the lottery, pure probability.

Yet another guy gets the promotion at work. Good luck? or just hard work?

The harder you work, the luckier you get.

Brothers in Law are perfect examples. Dumb luck and no luck...

Younger B I L decided in college that he would get into ROTC to help defray expenses since he was from a military family.

Graduated and ended up in pilot training and caught a lucky break and got to fly the RF-4. They were going to retire the platform for recon and offered him a slot in the Blackbird but he had a little inside info and knew that one was going to be parked too so he turned it down.

Normally, that would have meant he would get to fly a desk for the rest of his career but somehow he ended up in F-15's. He retired from USAF and went to work for Delta as pilot right away and got to the right seat quickly.

He was one of the last hires to be put on furlough when Delta started to crash and burn. You woulda thought that his string of luck was out but he got invited back into the USAF to supervise a simulator program for pilot training. That gig was coming to an end and Delta started pushing him to get back on but he got offered a better job with a Civilian Contractor for the AF and took that job. Delta starts laying off those that they called back - so, he made the right decision.

His brother went to the Academy... is a great student... did his pilot training and ends up flying tankers. Time for him to retire and he has to go with a small company as a pilot since there are no jobs available in the airline industry. He tries for several years to get on (after all he was flying the military version of the plane that most of the airlines were flying back then). Finally, after agonizing over the only offer he gets he decides to take the job with Continental when the pilots walked out so he becomes a scab. After all of these years when he goes to work there are pilots (who weren't even around when it all went down) who will not talk to him because they consider him a scab.

    Go figure.

He was making all the right decisions and circumstances just didn't go his way. He got out when the airlines were really hiring and then the bottom fell out and he had to go the route he did. His little brother, who did everything exactly the way you shouldn't, got all the plums. Older brother really wanted a boy and never got one... Younger brother must have sex in the correct position for male prodigy - ends up with two.

    Go figure.

What time were you up there? We went wheeling up there at lunch in my boss's jxxp, hadn't been up there in many years, it was fun..my boss broke his steering stabilizer so we had to drive back slow (vehicle has notorious death-wobble)... :)

It is alot cleaner in Left Hand than the last time I was there years ago, still alot of crap from people shooting, but atleast it's a smaller area and up further from the paved road...

I usually say a person makes his own luck, but some people are just born lucky. A freind of mine is that way, we go to all sorts of field days and conventions together. It don't matter if I walk in first or he does, we both fill out the raffle tickets together. Over all these years he's won countless thousands of dollars worth of s***....a huge 3/4" drive socket set, a big QSP shop vac, a few rifles and shotguns. I can make the list go an and on of what he's won, but I've never won crap. Zero, nothing.

There's this one waiter at work who seems to be lucky. You never know what you're night is going to be like, generally if you're slated for a large party you'll make some money. This guy can have no prospects for the evening and end up with tables that ring ridiculous money and then get tipped 25-30% on them. Most have a problem believing that it's skill on his part, he's a slacker, but either he's really lucky or makes some sort connection with people so that they want to give him money.
