those that have put ls engines in their landcruisers what do i need besides the engine and a 4l60e tranny? i know i need the t/c adapter for the speedometer and im getting the wiring harness fixed up so its a 4 wire setup. is there engine mounts that just bolt in or do i need to weld some in? is there a adapter so i can reuse the stock console shifters? advanced adapters has the headers and the tach converter. what else to i need to now before ripping into my cruiser?

ill be posting lots of pictures when i start but i need to know pretty much everything i can before i start. my cruiser is my dd so it has to be like a weekend project. i bought a 72k ls1 and 4l60e tranny out of a 05 firebird trans am

Search in this forum on swap and vortec. We have covered all the gotchas.

There probably needs to be a master list of parts since enough of us have done the swap now.

You will need:
Motor and trans - trans (either 4L60e or 4L80e) needs to be a 2WD trans application.
T-case adapter from Marks Adapters. You can source this from Advances Adapters and be prepared for a month or so wait time.
center dump exhaust headers
advanced adapters universal LS weld in motor mounts - the jeep ones work great.
an electric fan - I am running a lincoln mark 8 dual fan controlled by a DC controller. The stock radiator is plenty for these motors.
Camaro/Firebird LS oil pan, pick up, windage tray, and dipstick/tube (you already have that
In your case, the front accessory mounting is going to need to be switched out for the vortec truck stuff (alt, a/c compressor, power steering pump and belts and water pump)
wiring harness for the LS motor - modify your stock harness or buy a pre-made one.
PCM will need to be flashed to eliminate the VATS security system.
A shifter - the '90 - '92 shifter can be retrofitted for a stock look and control of all gates.
A lift kit - you need at least 3 inches to get the front drive shaft to clear the trans pan and make room for the exhaust down pipes.

That's the big stuff. The rest is just a myriad of little parts to finish the install and get it running. You can't be scared of wiring because you will need to dissect the toyota engine and trans harness to pull out the circuits you need to retain. The stock speedo will still work because it senses off the VSS in the t-case. The adapter will have a place to mount the GM VSS for trans control.

I wouldn't bother with the 4l60e, I would have thought you could get a good built 4l80e over there for a good price.
I killed a 4l60e in my 80 with a light cam and a good tune, but I went back to the cruiser 5 speed manual.
Marks Adaptors has a great range of stuff, but with the dollar in our favour at the moment it may be pricey stuff. I can post pics of the modifed truck sump we knocked up to clear the front diff.

Cheers

A weekend project won't be realistic; I'd rent a car for the week while you do this swap. Curious as to why not use the toyota A343F tranny to make it simpler? Would the adapters be too costly?

This motor swap wouldnt realistically happen in a weekend.. Unless everything was prefabbed and layed out, but still...

4l80s are nice, but they have two fundamental issues - they are heavy, and the first gear ratio at 2.48 is not good for wheeling.

The 4l60e can be built to handle the power of any of the vortec/LSx motors for not a lot of money, and the 3.06 first is awesome for wheeling.

It took me about 3 months. It's not an overnight deal.
Rockrod i did lq9 swap into 96 fzj80 trying to hook my Dakota digits for tach, and if you would know what wire

Rockrod I did lq9 swap into 96 fj80, I'm trying hook up my digital

The weight is ~100 lbs which is nothing in my opinion but could matter to some.

The first gear ratio is almost not even worth worrying about because you're not putting a 4L80 behind the 1FZ. When you're swapping in a LS or Vortec motor the crawl ratio that you're affecting with either transmission doesn't matter as much with a more powerful motor. My crawl ratio right now is 36:1. If I went with a 4L80 then it would go down to 32:1 but would go up to 40:1 with a 4L60. Behind a 400+hp LQ4 that I'll be installing I'm not going to notice the difference. And I wouldn't even worry about it on a stock 5.3L.
