Hello,
Just finished my axle job and I think my DS bearing is a little loose. I used the fish scale method and think I let the preload at the low point of the FSM recommendation (mine was ~7lb on DS, on the PS I set the load a little higher than the service manual recommends). To tighten up the bearing, is all I need to do follow the LandTank method as described in the Front Axle Faq or do I need to burrow deeper into the axle again? Also, after the Front Axle Service was performed there has been some squeaking coming from the DS of the truck body, I cannot pinpoint it and am wondering if there are any suggestions for places to look. I also put the OME control arm bushings in ~220 miles ago. Thanks for the help.

Recent bearing re-pack and the front brake clip was inadvertantly put on backwards...caused a squeak almost like the bearing was going out...turned the clip around to stop rubbing on the rotor and the noise was gone...

Just a suggested troubleshooting item.

If not properly setup it's common for them to loosen in the first few miles, I always recheck for play after ~100mi. The well proven torque method makes it an easy fix: Jack up that side of the axle, remove the drive plate and outer nut, torque the inner nut to 10ft-lb, install lock washer and outer nut, torque to 47ft-lb and bend the tabs then reassemble.

I always monitor temp on the first few drives, touch the hubs, they should be warm, but burning hot would be bad.:hillbilly:

Thanks for the response. Fair amount of play in the DS, slight play PS. Even w/ snapring pliers, those damn snap-rings take nearly as long as the whole rest of the procedure. Any guesses for what to check for the squeaking? The front hubs are much warmer than the rears. Touching the fronts for more than ~5 seconds would be uncomfortable.
