ok so im a new member first off.... i came across a land cruiser the other day and set up viewing.. but first off i did do some research on this site with the cruiser faq.

I am a little stumped on what i came across... i Live in the Dominican Republic and everything here seems to be a little backwards.

The P.O says its a 1989 but the motor has been swapped out at some point but he does not know what it is. he couldn't get ahold of his mechanic. It was diesel and had a turbo.

the LC seemed to start up fine with a little puff off back smoke but went away quickly..... however it did puff black smoke when he drove off... a constant stream of it actually. but quit between shifts and then continued under load.

i could here to turbo spool...when driving it. it had good torque going up a pretty steep hill. i was in 3rd maybe going 50km/h.

i did notice a slight rattle coming from maybe the lower portion of the motor but it was hard to here over the sound of the diesel motor.

shifts were smooth-ish, clutch seemed to grip fine.

it had coil suspension all the away around and minor rust along the top, other than that the body seemed fine.
Also during driving it seemed to drift all over the road... the steering was very sloppy.

i will include some photos, my question is what motor do i have???? the dreaded 2t? or 3bt?

and also what body style is it,j70?

he wants $7400USD for it. which i thought was steep. but is it? keep in mind i do live in the Dominican and vehicles are about double the price here...

also i realize that chassis tag, says it was a 22r for original engine, which was a gasoline motor..... but it is now turbo diesel... what motor is in hmmmmmmm......

Yup , that is different . The body is an RJ70. It used to have a 22R gas engine but now has a NON- Toyota diesel motor . ( maybe Mitsubishi) cant say foresure.

yeah the snorkel is just made from pvc pipe.... dominicans dont have the money to buy oem i guess...

as for anyone else do you recognize the motor.

The overall condition does not look too bad.

The vehicle is a RJ70, thats a light duty swb 70series landcruiser and the original engine would have been a petrol 22r, 2.4litre.

The current engine does not look like toyota and it is certainly not a 2lt.

The engine appears to be a little worn; black smoke and oil leaks, but these can be sorted at a resonable cost.

The steering wil no doubt be the track rod ends and the usual bushing, maybe the steering box too.

Use the steering and smokey engine to negotiate the price.

no idea what diesel that is ...

black smoke on driving is over fueling so chances are it could be dirty air filter, dirty injectors, poor fuel.

me, if i couldn't find specs on a diesel swap i would walk away. how the hell will you get parts for something you don't know what it is?

Umm...pretty sure I saw this exact same truck when I was in Cabarete in March. Can you confirm or deny that's the city you found it in?
