I'm trying to find some information on good trails around the Los Alamos area. I know the Santa Fe NF is there, any recommendations for some decent trails that would get me up for a view?

If all goes well, the Mrs and I will be moving out there in Oct. What is the realistic wheelin calendar look like? April to November or is the season longer depending on elevation and road closures? (or are the roads closed in the winter?)

Thanks,
Nate

Depending on how much snow we get in a particular year you can probably expect a minimum of 9 months a year of wheeling in those mountains. That's typically ~ March - December. But we regularly wheel up there year round if it's not a heavy snow year (which rarely happens). The only thing that is likely is that some of the less maintained roads might be closed if the snow is too deep. 2manycruisers (aka David) would probably be a good resource for more specific details since he lives in Santa Fe and works for the FS. jemezcrusher (aka Sam) lives in Jemez and would probably be helpful too.

I'm more interested in the sights than the "technical" difficulty of the trails. I like to get up to altitude or to nice scenery. I used to wheel in Colorado around Silverthorn and loved the views from up high. I know the mountains are different in and around Jamez and Los Alamos, but the little driving I did around Rt 4 was awesome.

I think we got you covered. Hurry up and move up here already! There used to be another Toy owner up there but we haven't heard from him in a while. He has a killer 4runner and a mild 80 if memory recalls.

I can think of at least 4 'locals' in that area that post regularly on this forum that I'm sure would be happy to show you around. One is in Jemez, one in Espanola and 2 in Santa Fe. And you're still only 60 - 90 minutes drive for someone from Albuquerque to drive up there and meet you. I'm one of those types that prefers the mild, scenic stuff because my wife won't let me do much else with her truck.

Quit blaming it on your wife.:D

Finding really cool camping sites is another primary objective.

I don't see that being an issue in NM!

True. We went camping a few years ago over Memorial Day (3 days) in a big meadow and saw *nobody* from our campsite all weekend.

Seriously. When you going to grow a pair and say that it is in fact you yourself that won't let you wheel.

I feel sorry for Danise...i betcha she doesn't even know you blame her in public!

Isn't it time for you to give the Camry to her and get that hundy ready to wheel?

:deadhorse: I'm not going to say a word!

Let's stay on track here gents!

We'll be out around Oct 15, are there any good books or resources for finding trails or camp sites? I've looked over amazon and most reviews are lukewarm at best.

Most of the really good places are found by word-of-mouth. Club members are a great resource and we are just down in Santa Fe. David is one of the best sources and he's only 5 minutes from my house.Josh

Also Mark with the built red 40 lives in LA. Vince does a lot of camping and fishing in that area.
