For a little bit more you can buy an HZJ73 with cable lockers, under 100k kms confirmed, arb suspension, 1HZ engine, good tires, no rust, snorkel and the list goes on. Check the classifieds.

I can attest to the condition of the truck and can personally say that the kms are correct - that truck drives like new.

For a 5K difference it is a no brainer. Everything Wayne says is bang on.

I'm not sur what classifieds you're looking in, but the only HJZ73 that fits that description is some guy in Ottawa that is trying to get $23,500 for his HZJ73.

The best price I've seen on a stock 73 is around $10,000 in BC. To add cable lockers is from $4000 - 6000, split the difference and I'm sitting at $12,000 - $13,000.

Going for a test drive on Tuesday. And I'm going looking for some reason not to buy it... Thanks for the advice Wayne.

BTW, I've seen a PZJ70 LHD from Central America in good condition for around the same money last year, but I wasn't in a place in life to buy it. Unfortunately, timing in life is everything.

I'd much rather buy this for the same money.

Already plated and registered in Canada. LHD to boot!

I don't quite understand why you would call this guy a whack job for listing his HZJ73 for $23,500. The HZJ73 is a very costly truck in Japan, so you can't really compare it to someone's beaten up BJ74 here... they are totally different animals. The HZJ73 commands much more money at auction, and again once it lands in Canada.

The cable locker conversion is a very nice touch. I have been thinking about doing that one myself...

I guess I was a little harsh with that post, sorry. I've since changed my post.

$22,500 is way out of my price range. Very very nice truck, but even at $17,500 that's too rich for my blood.

lets see,
$9K to buy
$1K for contact in Japan
$1.5 for shipping (including Japan's moving fees)
$1.3K for customs
$1.8K to Ottawa shipping
$4K for locker install
$2K for lift

add what ever else has been done and this is IF the purchase price was $9K, i have seen these sell in Japan for $14K... which drives up the customs costs. if it was shipped direct to Montreal then the container is a LOT more money.

Sounds like your budget is for a 3000 CDN BJ70 with 390,000 kms on it. Sorry, but it seems like you are not even sure of what you want - we went through this a few years ago:)

Went to see the BJ70 today and I was severly disappointed at the lack of leg room in the rear seat. :frown:

The rear seat backs were almost 90* to the seat bottoms and so close to the drivers seat that a child could not sit back there.

Having 2 little ones in cars seats is a requirement for me, so I had to pass on the 70.

Next question:

Do the 73/4 trucks have the seat further back? I looked for rear seat pictures, but did not have much luck. Can any of you 73/74'ers tell me if you can get a baby seat in the back?

With children, you'll very quickly tire of the two door... you should really only be looking at 4 door vehicles. I know the appeal of a 70 series two door is strong, but it's just not going to be practical with small children.

Maybe a PZJ77 or HZJ77 would be a better consideration.

I have a bj70 that we parked to buy a bj60 when the children came along two in car seats in the two door, was nuts. It does not give much room to crawl back their.. You NEED a 4 door.

the CND 70s have more leg room since the CDM has the rear seat mounted further back
the 4 door is a family 70 sedan, the 73/74 is still tight, the CDM 70 is still tight.

you should look at the Delica for a family vehicle.

The 73/74's seats have less leg room actually. I have a BJ70 and my 2 boys aged 4 and 6 love sitting in the back in their booster seats. But I agree with getting in the car seats would suck ass.

It is what it is though. Moving from car seats to boosters was another one of those milestones that I really looked forward to.

That's a good idea Wayne, I might even have the right vehicle for sale... I haven't posted it yet as I'm traveling abroad so no pictures aside from some previous posts and video. It's the white one. No to much details here as this is not the proper forum but just a heads up... (but it's fully converted to run wvo/veggie) and it's in Montreal right now.

okay, first, there are a few things you will want to look at before going into too deep water for a while.
the Delica is a cool ass ride but it has flaws (as do all vehicles) and the one that jumps out is the timing belt cover does NOT seal tight so if you encounter skag, mud, silt they you can tear out your idlers and seals. some silicone at reassembly cures this concern.
the air box is WAY down too low so a snorkel is needed. i had designed one that went up through the cabin when i was still into Delicas. i also designed a skid plate to protect the rad from branches, snow, stones etc.

sad to say, i lost interest in them so never bothered to go any further. i have a P25W sitting in Japan waiting for a boat ride over. it is manual and 8 seater in excellent shape but just don't have the desire to get it here...

good luck in your search.
cheers

I thought that the CDN BJ70's had more room. The JDM units are insanely tight. With the car seat in the back seat, it touched the back of the front seat. Did I mention that it was eactly 90* and did not recline at all. Japanese must have great posture.

I'm pretty sure I'll be going the HDJ81 route. Going to see that tomorrow.

I pulled the back seats on mine and put a cargo barrier right behind the front seats.

Heaps of room for the camping gear:)

I'm only 5'10' and I have the drivers seat as far back as I can get it.
I wouldn't want to be any taller.
Maybe just a bit:):bounce:
