Moving to Costa Rica in 10 days and one of the first things on the list is to pick up a large & capable 4x4 vehicle for traveling, exploring, camping, and hauling. Vehicles are generally pretty expensive down there and I'll have to pay cash so I wanted to get the community's thoughts on some vehicles based on limited photos and info, just to see if you guys saw any red flags or anything that caught your eye before I have a chance to look in person.

Wish list:
4x4, ideally capable in a variety of environments like sand, rock, wet, etc, (so lockers would be a plus)
4 doors
Cargo storage
Towing capabilities for small trailer/boat - Assuming I should be wary of the 4cyl engines?
Reliable, but I expect to do maintenance
Not shiny: I don't want to cringe every time i scrape a against a branch
Price: 20-25k for fully capable; I'll be wanting to have good tires, traction boards, running boards, snorkel & winch ASAP so I'm guessing that puts me in the <16k range for buying a mostly stock vehicle

Mehs
I don't care about bluetooth, back up cameras, touchscreens, dvd players, etc...
Cloth or leather is fine
Manual or auto is fine

-bolded entries below seem to have a good amount of mods already done
-mileage converted to miles

Obviously it's a lot to look at, but any help, thoughts, and opinions are greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time!

Not much help here.
Do you not currently own a toyota?
We are planning on just taking ours when we go. CR just dropped the import tax.

We could bring down the '00 LX470 but the american v8 would be difficult to support down there and we'll be needing a car asap. But it's on the possibility list in the distant future depending on how things pan out.

As for the import tax removal, a few key notes:
  1. It will only apply for those who have achieved temporary citizenship, like pensionados and rentistas, (which includes monthly bills to pay into the health system). E.g., it won't apply to you if you're still planning on border hopping every 3 months.
  2. Although part of the new legislature is to improve the citizenship application timeline, it currently takes about a year, but it was shut down completely for the better part of 2021 so i suspect there is some backlog.
  3. Congress passed the law last month, but it will take a few months for executive branch to lay out formalized regulations so it's not immediately available, even if you are already a citizen
  4. Tico time + lawyers + tax paperwork = a long time. if you're not already a resident, I wouldn't expect to be able to use this exemption until probably mid-late 2022

Good to know.
We are planning on going the rentista route.
We're also going rentista. Seems a bit safer than dropping 150-200k for a property that might take years to resell.
There's a good chance we end up going with a Montero or Cherokee but Im keeping my eyes open for a Toyota that hasn't been beat to hell and isn't $25k+

Most Patrols on the road are very old. They never sold very well there in the past 25 years. The general public masses have been buying whatever is cheap. Hyundais, Rav4's, Kias, Xterra's(with different names), etc
