I think I met ExtremeToy1 last summer in the parking lot of the Bass Pro shop and he told me a little about his project vehicles and the Gateway TLCA club. I have an 96 FZJ80 with 200k miles 3" lift and am ready to add a TRD blower to it. The blower is alread purchased but first I am looking for a good engine shop to to freshen up the engine. Replace seals, gaskets plugs etc. Someone I can trust to let me know if the engine needs a more serious rebuild or not. Also, I would like to rebuild the transmission at the same time. I was wondering if you had any advise or the name of a good engine machine shop. Is there a good place on the forums to place a request like this? If I've got the wrong guy, I appologise for the bother. Take care. If you see an ugly 96 license plate TUFTOY, that's me. I live in the St. Louis/St. Charles MO area. TIA

The only real question would be if you're running the original head gasket. With a blower, there may be some concern.

If it passes the bubble test (search in the 80 section) Personally I wouldn't worry about it. I'd just bolt it on and go.

Is there something wrong with the transmission?

If you want some help bolting the blower on yourself, I'm sure that can be arranged. None of us are running one, but mechanically I believe it can be easily accomplished in comparison to some of the other tasks we've completed as a group, or on our own.

I haven't read of needing to rebuild the trans as part of the SC prep. Unless you're having trouble I wouldn't worry about it. As wfd said, the head gasket is usually the main concern. If it were me, I'd bring the cooling system and other routine maintenance up to spec and then proceed with the blower. It sounds like a great group project if you want the help.

As a side note, you didn't happen to buy the SC from a guy named "William" did you? :D

I "heard" that William sold it mainly because he is absolutely dead set against modifying his truck. I see his rig frequently when I'm driving by the galleria on the way to the bar. he even had the tireshop search for factory take off rims and tires, so he could make the claim that he still had Jap air in his tires.

Not just the blower but some leaks as well

I bought the blower from dan from this site. I have an oil leak near the front of the block. I am not sure exactly where it is leaking from, but it looks to be near the main pully on the crank. I'd like to take care of that before I bolt on the blower, but I'm not sure if I can identify the leak. That made me think I should just go ahead and replace the head gasket and the gasket on the bottom of the block. Forgive my terminology, I'm a computer geek not a mechanic. Just trying to learn by doing. I have done zero maintenance on the trany, but it is giving me no trouble at the moment. I just thought once I get started taking things off, I should take care of as much as I can while I'm in the neighberhood. Lastly, if I did take the head off I would not know what to look for to indicate maintenance is needed. Lastly again, I do get the P0401, so I know I need to clean something out near the EGR. That's it. Oh, and I am looking for people as insane as I am for keeping this thing instead of replacing it.

If the tranny is giving you no troubles then I would just do a "fluid exchange" . Several shops will have a low pressure pump procedure that will change out the fluid. Under no circumstance do a High pressure flush. You can also do what I believe is called a rodney flush.

As much as you can, trying and learn how to do as many hands on repairs as you can. It will only help you in the long run.

Thanks for the info and link. I've taught myself quite a bit about the suspension and drivetrain with the help of this site. I've been leary of any engine or tranny work. Mostly because other than the oil leak, recent P0401 and a starter rebuild this truck has been very solid. Not bad for 200k miles of all kinds of driving. As for the tranny, that has always been like black magic to me.
